THE Mounrain Roures.--The Alta a
few days since had an article contrasting the
comp2rative advantages of the several routes
across the Sierra Nevada. Of the Henness
Pass route it sys: ‘i
In the point of way trade, the Henness route
is probably superior to the others, but this
advantage is nut suffic.ent to counterbalance
the greater distance.
has a decided advantage over all the others.
Anadditional thousand feet of height at the
may add many millions of dollars to the cost
ef constructing ‘a railroad, which cannot
have abrupt. turns or very -steep grades.
With the height of the mountain bicreases the
danger of totaliaterruptiun of travel by snow,
the expense of keeping the track clear, the
cost of freight, and the amount of repairs to
keep the road in order. In altitudethe Henness Pass is 400 feet lower than the Truckee,
1,500 teet lower thau the Johuson Pass, and
4,740 feet lower than the Big Tree Pass
This isan advantage worth milhons of dollar.
tu the Hemiess Pass. eas
In the matter of grade, the Hennéss Pass has
an equaladyintige. That Pass is on a level
with Washve Valley; there is so little aseent
going westward through this Pass that the
traveler scarcely knows when he reaches the
suiomit. There is, at that point, no eastern
“slope” to the Sierra Nevada; no western rim
to the Great Basin. The western slupe of
tho mountaia is more regular ‘and gentle than
ubany other plice, In October last, an eightinule team wentthrough the Pass from the
west with a load of seven tuns; a six-mule
team with three tuns and a half ald two
horses with a taa-and three-tourths. We
have not the figures forthe loads hauled
through the other pass s, but theygire notse
large on an average as those tiken ‘through
