of diverting a portion ef the Patriotic Relief Fund from its original destination. He
says:
I would suggest to the generous Californians to bestow some Of their munificent gilts
on the dged and helpless widows whe sacrificed their husbands, and some their only support and comfort, for the country’s cause. and
on the orphan children whose fathers:have
been slain trying to-uphold the righteous
cause of their country. . These are subjects
of charity for tho warm hearts of Californmi

My duties aa Medical.Inspector cause me to
see thousands and. thousands of sick and
wounded of -this vast army, and'to inspect
hundreds of hospitals and eamps, and I have
yet to see any ‘great suffering among our
treops arising from the want of medical at
tention, hospital supplies and even luxuries.
Our. sick and wounded are well cared for, and

agriculturist nesr Brussels, having succeeded
in removing the bad smell and disagreeable
taste of some butter by: beating or mixing it
with chloride.of lime, he was encouraged by
the happy reeult to continue his experiments,
by trying them upon butt 6 id as tu
be past use; and he hae“restored to\butter
the odor and taste of which was insup “
ble, all the sweetness of fresh butter. The
operation is extremely simple, and easily
practicable for all. It consists in beating
the butter in a sufficient quantity of water,
into which had been mixed 25 or 30 drops
of chloride of lime to two pounds of butter.
After having thus broughtall ite parts in conhour or two: afterwards withdrawn and
washed anew in fresh water, The chloride
of lime having nothing injurious in ‘it. Gan
safely be increased : but after having verified
the experiment, it wos found wnat 25 to 30
drops to 24 pounds of butter were sufficient.
After washing it so, we'd hang it on the
fence a day or two, to dry.
