ALFALFA.—Thi; valuable Clover should be better understood and more properly ap. préciated, ae it is of the sweetest and “most nutritious of all . Alfalfa shou'd _on-light, Pp, vTieh, sandy loam, or alluvial deposits, like-the banks. of rivers, and never planted on ad soil, or any land that ix not loose’ and porous, so when properly plowed, 16 te 20 inches deep, the rovt can penetrate and find moisture. Alfalfa should-never be allowed te grow rank-and tall, but planted thick, and when twelve or fifteen inches high it should be cat and dried in the shade, or = in stacks early, so as to dry it up. Wilted only and and stacked, will secure a very fragrant and. delicious food -for-sthek. Alfalfa grown on alluvial bottoms has been. mowed ax riany ua four times in-aseason, and yielded-acrop—of, more than ten tons per acre for the season. Sixteen pounds per acre is the quantum of seed. Everything Which springs from the goil is flouristing in the Southern part of the State, as the fleods have not injured that seetion in the least, but rather benefitted it, Beef cattle ate numerous—~so numerous in fact, that it will be an impossibility for any combination of speculators to control them. Moreover. they are growing fat. As soon ag the Toads will permit, they. willbe driven this way in immense droves ; so our people need have 10 fears of having to pay high prices for beef any great length of time—on the contrary they will have beef in plenty, fatand cheap.—San Feancisco Call. _ Be aay Peat inne Fal. op THE Bia Tree —On the 29th of December occurred an incident in the Big f Tree Grove, which will create a sensation smong voyageurs aud curious travelers who have visited that place, wherever the news may reach them in the world: The mammoth tree-of that marvelous forest, Hereuiva, fe. But a few housed, aud those on high gréund, have been left standing. ‘The erent Anaheim vineyard, it is esid, has been washed away. The land on whieh it was situated being all made land, the eonfirmatien of this great disaster may be . ‘oked for.
