as for balla, if a fellow dida’t engage. partners for the whole night daring the first half
bour, his game was up se fur as dancing that
night was coneerved, and the only thing left
him was to go and drown his sorrew and disgust.in the bar room. An untiarried lady
was besieged, flattered, almost worshipped,
~and her only difficulty consisted in what the .
French. call lembarras~du choix. The
-dueky (?) fellow’who succeeded in winning
a’prize spared no pains, no sacrifices to keep
that prize. Times might be going hard with
him, his diggings might be getting poor or
his business stagnate, Mrs. Jones or Mrs.
" Smith never knew or cared to know anything
about such matters. Their flounces were
_ never fewer, and lace and meize entigue,
: pearls and diamouds were in as great demand
ae if their husbands had been: possessed of
the mines of Goleonda. Many a girl, whose
highest aspirations had never before risen
xbeve a gingham or de laine dress became so
fastidious as to spurn everything but silk and
brocade. In short women were scarce and
‘therefore in great demand, and we don’t blame
‘them for taking advantage of circumstances.
‘On the other hand another claes of women,
~ left in the old States by their husbands, who
_ had come here te enrich themselves, were
not quite so happy. Tho number was so
great that in every Atlantic State they formed
anew and distinct class known by the name
of “ California widows.” The California
widow got ‘to be a very interesting institution. Some pined away and died, though
these were few; others bore the absence of
their lords with~Christian resignation, and
others again didn’t do either of these things.
But of this -‘nuf ced.” In the course of
time things have changed and California has
now become an old State, sufficiently popu.
lous to supply new gold countries with fortune hunters. Already has she supplied Nevada Terntory with her hurdy settlers,
and now everything promises that a fresh
drain will be made on our male population by
the Carriboo and Salmon River mines. Matters will be reversed. California, who made
eo many widows in the oiher Stutes will, in
her turn, be served in the same way by Carriboo and Salmon River. Large numbers of
excited hombres, in various parts of the
' State, are preparing to leave. Well, go on,
gentienien, and may heaven bless you !—
** Local’ will stay behind and console the
women.
SuProsep Fir.—A singular circumstance
occurred yesterday morning at one of our
hotels. A-young man from the mountains
invited two or three of his creditors, whom
he had come a long way out of the snow to
pay, up to the bar to drink. Going up, he
told them he was coming round pretty soon
to settle up. The unbibuation teok place,
when on the young man putting his hand to
his pocket, he was seized with unaccountable
spasis-and~kicked about at a terrible rate,
nearly capsizing his ereditore, and exclaiming, “ Dhave been robbed! I have been robbed!" One of the creditors quietly remarked “it was all right.” paid for the
whisky and walked out, whistling as he
went. .
