SMITH, : TT JusT HOW IT 18.—A private letter from Colusa toa friend of ours has the following, which illustrates the secesh character to a a dot. We have been kindly permitted to “T will tell yeu of alittle secesh incident, that-occurred in Colusa 'a few weeks sinco. a. T. ——4 > There is a woman who teaches school in that -ed with Southern sympathy. delectable town and who ie strongly tineturOne day, after giving the girls a receas, she.enid to the boys, ‘‘As many of you as are in favor.of the Cons federate Gavernment, hold up your hands.” Every hand was raised, but those belonging to one little fellow by the name of.!Ceok, -wh6, when the question ‘those in favor of the U. 8. Government” way put, raised his little brave handa, alone! The girle were then called in and the boys given a recess, when the cowardly little villains who had voted in favor of secesaia, pitched on to little . But they were only imitating the older secesh, who never fuil to attack some poor crip. ple, i, e. if there js a crowd of them together. So much for Colusa. Tae boy's father insde some stir about it, but the secesh compelled him to move out of town! There js “freedom of speech” for you, with a vengeance. O! “Constitutional Democracy!” thou art truly a pearl of consistency! It makes my very gorge rise when I hear these fellows prate of “freedom of apeech" and “the press, the Constitution and conservatism.” EF Downey apenks of a “despotism that threatens to subvert every vestige of freedom jn the American Confederacy" and wants ~ the Democracy to assist in putting itdewn. . stop helping the Contederacy and assist the side of freedom; but they wo'nt do it, Copren ORe.—C-pper ore of a rieh qual ity haa been found iv Britieh Columbia. 4 bead of aative copper ban been diseutered OM ARE 2 OR RARE CoLLapse CoMING.—We are informed on the authority of men well versed in the ‘matter that a collapse is about to follow the silver speculations that have been madly carried on during two years or more. There is evidence that the crisis is at hand in the fact of the great depreciation in the price of stocks, even in the best claims, during the dast month. ‘There is probably not a mine iu Nevada Territory whose ‘‘feet” will sell for as uch as they would a month azo by . ten or fifteen per cent: and. the majority of stocks have depreciated ustonishingly The people have gone wild on s'lver specs ulations. It must have been evident long ‘ago toevery accurate observer; that there was not a solid basis for all this speculation. It was impossible that onestenth of all the mining claims loeated in Nevada Territory could be of any value. Silver, nor any other precious metal, underlies the surface of a thousand square miles iu oné body. There are ledges that are rich, and lasting as time’ but the land one hundred miles wide on each side of the Comsteck is not necessarily good for anything except to excite the hopes of simpletons and get their money with, when -. divided up by companies with high sounding names. Wild cat speculations have been the business of Washoe operators and. more money has been made to a few dealing in worthless stocks, than bas yet been extracted: from the Comstock lead. In consequence of the influx of men and capital into the Territury, ard the supposi« tive wealth represented in a huudred thousand claims and ledges, everything waa likely to be overdone. Speculations in city lots and buildings are apt to keep pace with the general inflation, and we would not be surprised if cities and towns were building over the mountains, that will ere long be comparitively uninhabited. é If we will but resgrt to a-little reasoning we will see there are grounds to fear out friends in Silverado have gofie to far. Up to this time there has been but ene ledge of positive value worked at Virginia city, and some of our citizens who have lived there years assure us there iano other that can be relied on. The Cumstock is the only j.ledge, and that will be ‘worked as long as some of the ‘mines of Cornwall have been worked—2,000 years. But this ledge is owned but by a few companies, and it can furnish employment to buta limited number of men. We will suppose that there are ten compas nies each employing two hundred hands— (we will be liberal in our figures)—Thie is not basis enough to justify the building of such a town as is going up at Virginia city. Mulitiply all our figures by ten, and yet, if all accounts are true, our friends at Virginia are not justified im all their enterprizes, Things must come to a substantial basis sooner or later. Wild cat speculations must have their day and their night. The latter we think, is coming rapidly, and, ifso, we shall soon sce a reaction. WELLER is aunounced to apeak at the Maryeville barbecue, where the funeral baked meats are expected to be plenty. John has a singular way of doing about barbecue times. It ia related of him that when the Breckinridge barbecue came offat San Leandro, during the last Preaidential election, the “states man” got drunk and slept two nights and one day in San Francisco, and arrived, much to his astonishment, at San Leandro, in time te see the bones of the feast the day after. — "Tis said, he still believes it was a trick on him te hurt his. political pruspeets, inviting him a day too late. : EF" Downey do'nt like the way the Amer. iean Government isadministered, and talks of tyranny. Let him go back to Ireland. out bim. THE citizens of Austin, Reeso river, have taken ‘measures for the coustruction of a road So gonneet their town with the route ofthe Daily Overland Mail. When the new road is built, the stages wilfrive through Austin on their way tu via. EP Downey suye tue war bas cost two thousand wilhons. Io making this statement he lies one half. ; E San Jose Kaicnoap—The road from San Francisco ty San Jose is ready tor the ties and irou. The care will run from San The work on this road w of the most eabstantial character reflecting credit apon all who bave e hand io the building. . The couutry ean get along by a pinch, with. aad from Califor. . Se ante AMA Te = Re — Wuar Tuey Mean.—The Richmond Ezaminer thus bollly avows the object of the rebels in forming their ungedly Confederacy. Read it, and you will see what'the copperheads are trying to help do. : “The establishment of the Confederacy is verily @ distinet reaction sgainst the whule course of the mistaken civilization of the age.s And this is the true reason why we have been left without the sympathy of the nations until we conquered that syinpathy with the sharp edge of the sword. For ‘Liberty, Equahty, Fraternity,’ we have deliberately substituted Slavery, Subordination and Gov-ernment. ‘hese social-éud political problems which rack and torture modern society we have undertaken to solve for ourselves, in our own way, avd upon our own principles. That tamong equalg, equality is right,’ ameng those who are natdrally unequal, equality is chaos; that there are slave races horn to serve, master races born to govern. Such are the fundamental princip! » which we inherit from the aneient world, which we lifted up in the face of a perverse gene~ ration that has forgotten the wisddm “of its fathers, by those principles we livé,gnd in their defense we have shown ourselves ready to die. Reverently we feel that our Confederacy is a God-sent missionary to the nations ‘with greet truths te preach. We must speak thm boldly; and whoso hath ears to bear let him hear.” Tue Man who Won’r Pay Tue PeixTER.— May he be shod with lightning and compelled to wander over gun<powder. May he have sore eyes, and a ebestout burr for an eye-stone: May every day of his life be more despotic than the Dey ot Algiers. May he never be permitted to kiss a hand~ some woman.
