, Democratic.. Fustox.—The: fusion of
the two wings of the Democratic party at}
such atime as this, is an astonishing event}
when we come to look at all the circum.
~ gtances. Why,.one. year ago a party of
~ men met.at our Court. House, and among
the resolutions introduced and advocated by
aatrong eleméat in the convention, was one
denouncing the war in the bitterest terms
‘and pleading for. peace. The intr.ducer of
that resolution, more frank and honest than
many of his associates, told his auditors, the
convention, that he was 4 secessionist, and
that all present were secvssionists and said,
there was 0 use denying the fact. Some of
the members of that conclave, acted on the
~ od Robmson policy of doing anything to
beat the Admivistration party, and they took
a milder course and voted the resvlution
down. But mark! they did nothing -to show
they were not of the same kidney as the
most ultra member of the convention. They
did nothing showing their repugnanes to a
secessionist, open and avowed. On the contrary they, by every act seemed to appreci‘. ate theeompany, and did not deny being
what George D. Roberta said they were.
Such actions show the status of that body —
Tt waa to all intente and purposes a body
of secession sympathizers—no mistake on
that point, or else why did they not purge
their company of the presence of an. open
~ and andisguised secessionist?
%
~vor of the prosecution of the war?
Bat politics make strange bedfelluws.—
Only one year has rolled around and a strange
conjunction has taken place. The acknowl~ .
edged secessionists of last year are found
billing and cooing with the blood-thirsty
war Democrats of last year Advocating
principles antagouistic as fire and water they
ate together on one platform. The doves
have invited a hawk. to their cote and the
former must suffer. Poor war Democrats!
Buta handful of them, they are ready to associste with miltitudes who hope that Jeff.
Davis will succeed in overturning thie’ beat
of governments, Two years ago the disloyal Democracy were abeut equal to the
loyal wing. Since that time. the. true war
men from the Douglas ranks have become
members of the Adminiatraton war party,
leaving but asimall fragment outside to freeze
This emall remnant is foolish enough tv comanit its fate to the hands of a larger erowd,
that will outvote: and overrule it in every tors. They can have.ne community of feelrespec, And what is the indtcement ?—
There is nothing in sight iv the shape uf principle, as a bait, except that the secessionists agree to catch up, for policy sake, the
plank of the minority faction, favoring a vigy
orous prosecution of the war and the restos
ration of the Union. But does any one, in
his sober senses, believe that secessionists,
or the majority in the fusion party are in fas
They
were horror-struck at the thought.of shedding the blood of brothers (7) last year.
They are as chicken-hearted to-day. They
want the votes. of.the foolish Douglas wor
Democrats, and nothing else, an! would as
treacherously subscribe to a pretended war
policy as they would take up arms against
the Government if they dared. Tie Punic
faith of the breed is well established. Your
Jeff. Davis man takes an oath with as littie
thought of its sacred character as he gulps.
his hoe cake and whiskey in a Southern
camp. Fouls, that these Douglas war Dem__oerate are, if they are _not_really and-traly
enemies of the country at heart.
ES 'The report tound in the Charleston
Mercury, that the rebel Congress in secret
session had authorized Jeff. Davis to suspend
the habeas corpus at pleasure, has been dee
nied because the copperhead newspapers
have made no mention of it, and if it Were so,
those eapecial champions of Constitutional
liberty would give the rebel Congress fits for
doitg stich an unconstitution:} act!

no difference in the criminality of the act
whether they shoulder a musket in the front
of the battle, or open a fire in thé rear; each
is alike traitorous and scoundrelly. 5
A few years from now, when this rebelamong all men, and its actors are remembered with horror for the mischiefs they have
done, thege copperhead miscreants will bear
vo their abashed fronts the brand of Judas
and Arnold. Curses will light upon their
iniquity, and they will call upon the rocks to
hide them from the. righteous ‘wrath of-the .
people they sought to betray,———
‘Judas sold his Lerd for thirty pieces of
silver. Arnuld sold his country fora few
thousaud pounds and un English curmnission.
One went and hanged himself. The other
lived, the scorn even of his purchasers, till
obscure death took tim from the earth he
polluted. In this day Northern men, with
secession affinities, are willing. to sell their
country in imitation of the ancient copperheads we have named, to-get paltry offices.
To be the recipient off few thousand dollars
of public money, they associate with seces~
sionists, and do ull in their mean little way
they can to encourage the rebellion, by polluting their neighbors with disloyal coetrines.
and pursuading them into sympathy with
treason. Such men, from dirty selfishness,
risk the peace of this State, by uiding to turn
itover to men who are in dead y hostility to
its interests, and who will be estisfied with
nothing short of muking ita purtof the
Southern Confederacy. :
* The only safety for the people who arelovers ol liberty and the Union ia to eschew
all asgociation with such men—to shun them
as they would an orgunized band_of maletacing with, or friendship for, men who desire
the failure of the Guvernment or the success
of the rebellion.
No matter on what pretense the copperheads may go into the ensuing political fight,
they. have but two obj-cts: one to seize the
offices, the otherto give the moral and political influence of this State against the Govvernment. With euch objects they should
be weighted with an indignation ~that will
crush them out of potitical existence,
