ad shia eedialaal ta town appeared to have
very little life left them. In fact out Local .

the corvee of Broad and Pine streets put

town at the hour of 2.P. M. Tike menotony™
*was only broken by the oceasional ernesing of
an sleepy cur; the apple nien were
their chairs, whilst the cigar dealers, ivel.
oped in «a cloud of smoke from their meershaums, were absorbed in reverie, apparently
dreaming of imagitary customers. The return of the Cadets somewhat enlivened. mat.
ters; the shrill notes of their fife and the
beating of their dram startled people from
their lethargy, and everybody admired the
Cadets as they marched through town with
“all the pomp and cireumstance of g-a-l-orious
war.” The ball in the evening was a fine
tirn out, as the boys had sold in the neighborhoed of one hundred tickets, and up to
the time of our going to press everything had
‘gone “‘as merry as a marriage bell.”

CouLDNor ‘se Convicrep.—A fellow
was arrested by officers Scott and Knerr,
night before last, for having stolen a pair of
Chinese ear rifigs. They had been stolen the
« night previous from a Chinese house on Commercial street, and this man waa off-ring
them for sale in another Chinese house adjoining, when the owner happening to see the
rings reengnized them at.onee and raised an
_antery which brought the officers te the spot. .
The fellow was getting aw ay. but seeing the’
officers he dropped the rings in the street.—
They were picked up and he was arrested and
Yndged in jail. Yesterday morsing he was
brought hefore Judge Kendall. but there being no._legal testimony against him the Judge
had to release him although there is little
deabt that he had stolen the ear-rings.
To BLACKSMITHS. We call the attention
of binckamiths te Mr. Guillory’s advertise-nent.in another column. The establishment .
offered for sale or rent is the only one in
North Bloomfield, and we have no doubt that
aman understanding the business will find
this a firet rate chance.

GAs.—Gas was first evolved from coal by
Dr. Clayton, in 1739. Its applieation to
purposes of illumination was first tried “by
Mr. Murdoch, in Cornwall, in 1792. Sir
Humphrey Davy, alse a Cornishman, stated
his opinion before a committee of the House
of Cominons, that 1¢ would be impracticable
to-light London with gas. We see his error.
The first display of gas-lighte was made at
Boulton and Watt's foundry, in Birmingham,
on the occasion of the gs for peace,
in 1802. In 1805, gae was permanently used,
to the exelusion of lamps and candies. at the
cotton mills of Phillips and Lee,-Manchester.
