presses soon lose their captious tone of expression, and the. people at once. manifest
their suspicions that such presses are not

SaALuTary Errecr OF AN ARMY ORDER.
The recent order isaued by ‘Gen. Sumer
that all unsound men. in .the service should
be dismissed, has had a wholesome effect.—
The following resignations have taken place
from the Sixth Infantry: Second Lieutenant Stoughton, of New York—resiguation
ae cared of the Mississ"ie more than mortal can predict ; but,
‘he should drop into a Louisiana grave, it is
véty certain it would not hold the bones of
‘an abolitionist. Gen.. Butler is but one of
the many thousands of northern volunteers
who are just such abolitionists as he is.
The truth is, that the genuine northern
abolitionists are.as inveterate in their hatred
of tlie’ American Union as the secessionists
of South Carolina. It is difficult to say which
of these factious have labored longest and
with most zeal to rupture and disintegrate
our glorious Republic. Influenced by opposite motives, they, nevertheless, have worked diligently for a common object, and that
ebjéct the dismemberment of the Union.—
Though hating each other with # fierce and
implatable hatred, these northera abolitioniste and southern secessionists are sworn allies and brothers in the unholy work of . undermining American nationality. Thank
Héaven! the hands of beth these sacrilegious factionsara about to be paralyzed and the
task, at which they have wrought with such
malignant industry, will remain unaccomplished
Eyerybody-has heard of Wendell Phillips.
He 'isthe'representative man of northern abalitionism—at once its exponent and oracle—
and, when he speaks, he speaks for all the
abolitionists north of Mason & Dixon's line.
For. years he as denounced the Americai
Union and Constitution. The one he brands
as analliance with oppression, robbery, and
murder, and the other as a covenant with
hell. ‘He isin raptures over the rebellion of
the cotton states, and no southern priest
prays more heartily. than he that the hands
of Joff Davis and his brother rebels may be
strongtl ered. Not: long since, at New Bedford, in Massachusetts, he addressed a large
auditory’ of abolitionists, dénouncing the of.
forts now ‘being made to reconstruct the Up' jon. He argued against.tho ,warlike attitude which the Federal Government. has asgumed, in order to defeat secession, as a sin
against humanity, and strenuously advocated
a peaceable separation of the free and the
alave states.

in store clothes had given the old man $500,
cash in. hand, for his daughter, and the latter
was persuaded to reject Brown—which was
done—and poor Brown had to give up all idea
of marrying, for a time, at least. What be
has done with the furniture, the stove-pipe,
and the jewlery which he received in lieu of
affection, Ido not know: but I have seen
Brown on"his way from the city, swearing
eternal vengeance on the father of the girl,
who he says was the cause of turning -him
into a furniture dealer, and subverting the
smiles of his daughter from him for $500.
NEWSPAPER TRIALS.—The Virginia City

bother of conducting a paper in a new country until he has tried it, During the past
week wo have had no items—not even a respectable dog fight. Just as we are going to

they are alla week old. The “devil” is bellowing hke a mad bull for copy ; the wind is
blowing like blazes; and we have a bad cold.
That hig bar which we expected to come out

he intended to give uaa thrashing (he can’t
do it—that’s some consolation) ; and we don’t
cure if the paper. never comes out.
