She was, no doubt, assisted from outside, . The miserable wretch js out on anotherspree. Officer Knerr says that the calaboose ‘js in such a dilapidated state, that-it js-almost useless: to confine-any one in it, as an escape can be effected with . exse. We would suggest to the Board of ‘Trustees the appropriation of a small sum, to be appropriated towards its repair, as it is one of the most useful iustitutions we have, not excepting the Pine street bridge. RACING IN THE STREETS.—Officer Scott, yesterday; arrested a man for racing in the streets. Several such arrests have been made lately, and we think that fast ones will conclude, after awhile, that it is more proitable to ride soberly. “Tue Uxion a Auburn Signal, having been run into the ground, by the strong secessionism ofits editor, changed ptoptietors, and now appears as “The.Union . Advocate,” under the auspices of Wm. Duncan & Co. It isnow an excellent weekly FOURG tO nC UO U with marked ability. i. i eITue ELevaTor MILL.—This mill was ‘sold at Sheriff’s sale, yesterday, Mr. Oley . 7 ane Tited ‘Torson was the purchaser, for the sum of three thousand dollars. The mill cannot have cost less than four times that amount. THE WATER Wonxe. —Mr. Marsh is vigorously prosecuting the laying down of his pipes. Some thirty men are at work, and they will soon have the pipes under ground. Down WITH THE DusT.—The sprinkling eart appeared yesterday, for the first time this year. Retieious SERVICES UNDER DIFFICULTIES.— The Rev. Mr. Dickinson, of this town, had an eventful time up at Whisky Diggings, one evening last week, and as we have had no secresy enjoined upon us we, will relate.the story as we heard it: He had made arrangemerits with friend Cook te proeure the use of the latter’s bar room. to preach in ; and in the evening, prompt to time, our clerical ftiend was at Cook's hetel, waiting for the landlord to appear ; while thus occupied, and standing near a monte ta, ble, a “gharp” who was déaling the gametur aes to Mr. D.and requested him to * amutate the keerds.” Of course a refusal folwed the invitation. Ina shorttime Cook came into the bar-room, and onr mysterious friend again asked permission to preach in the room. Cook granted the permission, and ‘added : “ Certainly you can have the use of the room to preach a sermon in; but make it good and short, ‘cause the hurdies are here, end I want to make some money!” A large crowd had assembled to hear the sermon, which was attentively listened to, and marked by no serious interruption. [One dirty fellow patronized the epree maker during the service.} At the conclusion of the exercises a hat was passed around for the fhinister, and a liberal contribution was made; then the chairs and tables were moved back to the sides of the room, an accerdeon and * four hurcy-gurdy girls appeared, and Those whe came to pray remained to danee. [La Porte Messenger. Senator DowGLas.—The Tribune's correspondent says, having seen it stated that Senator Douglas had received an appointment of Brigadier General, he asked the President ifit wassv. He said it was not, and that he had not thought-of tendering it to him. He also said that if: gentlemen were to be appointed from .civil. life,. he imagined: there weré tiany who would be inferior to Douglas in that position—that Senator Douglas was the first to tell him of anticipated troubles in Maryland and to point qut the proper rout: via Perryville and Annapolis, and suggested that Fort Monroe and Point Comfort were the points that commanded the whole of that section of the country. Lincoln referred with pleasure to the fact that Douglas earlier than any called upon him, a termination to stand by him and approving of his course. No Fosreninc or Inpustay¥Y THERE.-The constitution of the southern confederate States’ is like the constitution of the United States, excepting afew clauses. These cheap compounds are being offered to the public at almost any price, and are industriously hawked about and peddied in every variety of style, until our citizens have despaired of obtaining a genuine and pure Wine.
