Dewey's Friends
Shocked by His
* ’ Announcement.
Wasutneaton, April 4—Admiral Dewey’s announcement of his Presidential
aspirations bas created the most pe
culiar political sensation ever felt here.
Nobody regards it seriously. On all
sides and from members of every politigal party, come expressions of astonishment and ridicule. Opinion
seems universal that the Admiral has
wrecked completely the good opinion
the American people had of him. His
close friends are dumbfounded. His
brother-in-law, John R. McLean, who
has had wide political experience, when
told about the Admiral’s announcement, exhibited symptoms of fainting
away, and, while refusing to make a
statement, did say it was pews to him.
Mrs. Dewey is.responsible for this announcement without doubt. It was
discovered today that for the last two
weeks she has been telling her social
awarded, informed the Board this afternoon that if the county officers
would vacate the building in six weeks
the company would complete the work .
within six months from that time.
It is thought that the County Offcars will be installed into their _ new
places about the first of December.
The Pacific Construction Company
will file a bond for the full amount. of
the contract for the fulfillment thereof,
and also guarantee the payment of all
claims and demands for labor and materials furnished.
The Board ailowed Wm. Mooser &
Son $843.57 for services as architects.
When the building is completed it
will be one of the most convenient as
well as one of the finest looking structures in the State.

make a political announcement, and
she has such sublime faith in his popularity that she firmly believes he can‘
be elected tothe highest executive office in the world without regard to
party, platform or political managers.
At the White House the subject was
discussed. The President showed no
concern over the announcement, but,
shrewd political manager that he is, he
expressed his sorrow over Dewey’s
s'upendous blunder.
Here is what some Californian’s think
of Dewey’s candidacy : 59
Representative De Vries: “I do not
seriously regard the candidacy of any
man who has no platform upon important matters.”
Representative Waters: “If the

should say he ought to have a political

Representative Kahn: “I feel satisfled that Dewey stands absolutely no
chance for nomination by either party.”
Representative Barham: “I don’t

Representative Needham: “His candidacy makes no difference with the

Final Verdict.
ALBANY, N. Y., April5—The Molineux
case is not expected to be taken up by
the Court of Appeals until next winter.
The delay is in part explained by the
enormity of the record which must
be placed before the judges. When
this record is typewritten it will contain as many words as are to be
found in all of Thackeray’s writings,
excepting the earlier sketches and
poems. The judges will not read the
whole of it. They will only turn to it
for reference, and read thove parts of
it which are involved in the argument
upon appeal. Otherwise, it would be
impossible to get an opinion under
three years.
Two Women Asphyxiated,
San Franorsco, April 4.—Two gas
aspayxiation cases were reported to the
Coroner this morning. The victims
were women. One was a suicdie and
the other an accident. Mrs. Leopoldine Goetz took her life in her bedroon
at the family residence, 961 Golden
Gate avenue, by turniag on the three

were found dead in their rooms about
60’clock this morning. Mrs. Leopoldine Goetz was the wife of Mr. Goetz
Front. street. They have a nice residence and are in comfortable circumstances. Last night she played cards
with ber son and daughter, Charles and
Leopoldine, until a late hour, and then
she went to bed. That was the last
seen of her alive. Mrs. Goetz was 58
years old and a native of Austria. Her
husband is now in the East or Europe

removed tothe Morgue. An inquest
will be held later in the week.
“Soo” Line’s Competition
Cuicaco, April-5.—A conference is
being beld here today in the Central
Passenger Association rooms between
the east-bound roads from Chicago
and the Chicago-St. Paul lines regarding the cut rate of $25 between St Paul
and New York. It is understood that
the Lake Shore and Michigan Central
favor pro rating on whatever rates the
Chicago-St. Paul roads may find necessary to meet “Soo” line competition.
A western Passenger Agent says that
on March 7 General Passenger Agent
Daniels of the New York Central stated if the lines between Chicago and
Buffalo refused to help the ChicagoSt. Paul lines meet “Soo” line competition, the lines east of Buffalo would.
It is claimed that if the New York
Central would stop giving special privileges to its Oanadian ally the “Soo”
line and Canadian Pacific would be
prevented from demoralizing the passenger rates between St. Paul and New
York.
Sampson’s Daughter.
Boston, April 6.—Miss Hannah
Walker Sampson, youngest daughter
of Rear Admiral William T.Sampson,
will be married to Eusign Wat Tyler
Cluverius,this evening, at the Admiral’s
home, at Charleston Navy Yard. The
bride’s only attendant will be her
small niece, daughter of. Lieut. and
Mrs. Roy O. Smith. Mr. Cluverius
was born in New -Orleans, and was
appointed to the Naval Academy in
1898. He was on board the Maine
when she was destroyed in Havana
harbor.. He served on the United
States steamship Scorpion during the
war with Spain. Afterward he was
transferred to the United States steamship Solao and went to Manila. Le
has recently received orders calling
him to the Naval Acedemy at Annapolis where he will be instructor in gunnery.
Bryan In Rosebury.
Rosgsvry, Ore., April 5.—William J.

address to the citizens'of this city, who
have made great preparations in his

Bryan and he feels it keenly.
Ladies’ Day.
New-York, April 5.—The New York
Press Club is holdinga ladies’ day re.
of the firm of Fargo & Goetz, at 316°
noon. Artists from the leading theaters are appearing, and an interesting
program has been arrangéd. This
occasion will mark the club’s farewell
to its present quarters. Great progress
is being made on the new rodms in the
Norton Building, on Nassau Street,
which is in the heart of the newspaper
district, and everything will be in
readiness for the club’s formal occupancy on May 1.
A Defaulter Caught.
Fresno, April 3.—J. W Shanklin.
who, just otie year ago today absconded with several thousand dollars of the
city’s money, while acting in the
capacity of City Clerk, was today
lodged in the Fresno County Jai) by
Constable Damas Shanklin, was arrested by the Sheriff at Hillsborough, Or.,
where he was known as Coleman. The
defaulting clerk had been in Oregon,
it appears, for several months, but it
was oply by the merest accident that
he was identified and taken :into custoday. It appears that.a boy at Hills4 borough, while looking through . the
Sheriffs office, saw Shankiin’s photo in
the Rogue’s gallery, and remarked to
Sheriff that he was no other than Coleman.

their Presidential preference. In all
national contests since 1876, there have
been factional differences. The Demo

Convention also opened here today.
Hanged Himself.
San Jose, April 3.—Frank Conniff,
an inmate of the Agnews Insane
Asylum, committed suicide this morning by hanging himselftoa bannister

WANT TO PLAY BALL.
Arrangements Being Made to Get the
Gilt Edges to Come Hore.
John Lammon of this city bas received a letter from the manager of
the Sacramento Gilt Edge Baseball
Club asking what arrangements can be
made for a match game of bali between
his club and any club here.
A meeting has been cajled at Armory hall tomorrow night and all who
are interested in ball playing are requested to be present. 1t is proposed
to make up a nine of the best players
here and Grass Valley and have the
Gilts come here and play at Casbin’s
Field. Among those talked of for the
team here are Overmeyer, as pitcher,
O’Connor, as catcher, Nevis as short
stop, and Ballestero as second baseman.
The Gilt Edges are very strong and the
boys here are aware of the fact that.
they must havea strong team to keep
them down, but think that with practice they can beat them.
