the World’s Fair at Chicago.
The Colorado Gold Mine is approached by
® long tunnel in the side of the hill. After . ’
at the mouth of a small side tunnel. .This
led us to the room where is displayed what
is known as the Colorado Gold Mine. This
wonderfal piece of mechanism shows, in
miniature, a mine ia full operation. It is a
vertical section ef the mine in which the
inventor was a laborer.
As for its size it is about seven fect inj «@
héight by eight or fen feet in breadth. The]
mineral brought from the mine the model is
intended to represent.
To the inexperienced, which comprise the. 6
greater number of the spectators, this exhibit gives a clear conception of both the
the construction and operation of-a quartz
mine, for nothing is lacking. Every detail
is there, even tothe nails which hold the
supports. Here he can learn the difference
between ‘‘overhand striking” and ‘‘underhand striking,” the difference in’ the oper\, ation of “veins” and “stringers; and what
is meant by s “‘tunnel” and a “‘drift.”’ Here
he can see, in active operation, an air pump
and a water pump, He can learn how. the
mine is ventil: and how the drifts are,
in working the stringers, prevented from
caving in when the rock is taken out—in
short he can learn all about practical mining that he is willing. to absorb.
On the surface is a complete -hoisting
works and quartz-mill plant,‘The miners who Visit this mechanism are
all lavish in their words of praise.

Miue is the. Oregon Hydranlic Mining Ex-. .
hibit.
Here, as Isaid above, Mr. Ayers has a
small placer claim in full blast. You can
perhaps judge the size of the whole when 1
tell you that the ‘‘monitors” are about seven
a. length, everything else in prePT heicl cichg te bcs won known to
eall-for any description, so I shall try to
make Mr. Ayers’ discovery clear to you,

NEV4 DA’ CITY, CAL,
Its purpése is explained, ié set forth, as
the inventor or discoverer boldly states it,
as “a successful method of impounding debris so as to preventit from filling up the
streams, thereby permitting the resumption
of hydraulic mining within the State without injury to a public or private interest.’
The plan of working is as follows: _
After the dirt containing the mites] has
been carried through the sluice boxes, over
the riffles and gritslies snd the, valuable}
ing allowed to flow directly into ilen, ;
is held back by adam. The water, instead]
of flowing over the is carried off by 6
vertical pipe, no.n8 to receive water
from the tep ‘and to allow it to flow out near
the baseiof the dam. As all the outflow is
from the surface in one place and at quite} .
@ distance from the sluices the water carried off is perfectly clear. Instead of des~
troying farms the miner builds them up. by
the banking of the debris against the dam.
"The inventor says that he has a mine of
this type in successful operation in Oregon,
and the Federal Government shows no dis~
position to interfere, thus proving the effiae ee Mr. Ayers hag not
Paten vention, but has left it open
