When the Republican party came into power in 1861 and inaugurated the protective system as a permanent policy they were barely $40,000,000 per annum. Then manufactares amounted to 12 per cent of the total exports; now they form 30 per cent of the enormously increased total. Yet there are people who will gravely tell you that the country can never have a prosperous foreign trade so long as it retains a protective tariff. Indigestion, nausea, are cured by Hood’s Pills.
