THE TRANSCRIPT. Eetablished Sept. 6, 1960. by Nar. P. Brows & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA ©O.CALIFORNLA _Bubiiohed every evening oncert BROWN & CALKINS. “ Me. BROWER. L. §. CALKINS. ve “ Butered at the Postofiice at Nevada City as TELEPHOEE No. 4 THURSDA? .....APRIL 7, 1898. A GOOD SHOWING. Aanual Meeting of tue Nevada County Narrow Guage Ratiroad. The Narrow Guage Railroad is in 2 fine condition, as will be seen by the president’s report submitted at the annual meeting of the stockholders yesterday. The net earnings for the ‘ year over all operating expenses were $22,968.97, which speaks well for tHe managerent of President Kidder and his corps of assistants. So satisfactory is the condition of affairs that Manager Kidder contemplates another reduction in passenger rates in thé near fature. At the meeting yesterday the following directors were elected : John F. Kidder, Peter Johnson,’ Edward H Brown, Frank G. Beatty, Charles P. ' Loughridge, A. H. Parker and George Fieteher. The only change in the directorate is the election of Mr. Loughridge, who succeeds the late George D. McLean. The board organized by electing J. ¥. Kidder president and manager; Peter Johnston, vice-president; E/ H. Brown, . superintendent and treasurer ; Geo. Fletcher, secretary and afiditor. PRESIDENT’S REPORT. To the Stockholders ef the Nevada ‘County Narrow Gauge Railroad Company—Gentlemen: In submitting herewith my.annual report for the year ending December 31, 1897, I would call yoar attention to the report of your Secretary and Anditor, which shows earnings as follows: f Increase of earnings over preceeding year Total amount operating expenses, including $108,957.43 Decrease in expenses over preceding year Amouut of material Sinee the ist of January there has been a very gratifying increase in the businéss of the road, and although our freight rates have been very materially reduced, necessitating greater expense in handling freight, I can see no good reason, at present, why this should not be a very successful year for this company, and it is my intention, about the ist of July, to reduce still further the passenger rate. Incladed in the expenses for the year was the cost of maintenance of roadway and track, $19,044 36. Included in this an.cunt was the cost of three miles of new No. 35 steel rails and fastenings for same, which have been laid on new ties. It is my intention to purchase some hundred tons more of No. 35 new steel rails. Respectfully submitted, : Joun F. Kipper, Chief Engineer, President and Manager. + 728 Growing Beautifully Less. “The greedy gold-power” has strnck another blow at silver. A half-million dollar plant, recently established in Maine, to obtain gold from sea water, has presented the results uf its work at the United States assay office in New York, in the shape of about 100 ounces of gold and silver bullion, the proportion being about one part gold and two parts silver. With the golo mines of the world increasing /their output enormously, and even the waters Of the ocean giving up their gold at this rate, the prospect of a goia famine grows beautifully less. see oDeafness Cannot be Cured. By local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the eur. There is only one way to curedeafness, and that is by constitutional remedies Deafness is caused by an iflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to ite normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out oi ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition oj the mucous surfaces.
