N. P. BROWN. L. 8. CALKING. PRIDAX.W 0. none APRIL, 7, 1899. “OP AND DOWN BILL,” Funny Impressions a Stranger Gained . While Visiting Nevada City. A correspondent of the Truckee Republican writes up a trip to Nevada City thus: ~ Astrauger visiting Nevada City at first is impressed with the charming irregularity of the streets, so unlike a checker-board that he is convinced he is im no danger of being “skunked.” The streets are built principally up and down hill, and a pedestrain especially if he is a fat man may obtain plenty of At the present time there is, of course, some mud, along. with other modern improvements. Bicyclists, ‘too, have a good time: push their wheels up hill, and when descending trail ‘a fence rail, brick-bat orany old thing attached to the rear wheel t6 prevent the machine from turning @ soniersault. The city contains many fine churches, school houses and asplendid Courtofficers inside, due, of course, to the fact that they are good Republicans: There are also many magnificent private residences, but in order to see some of them one must lie flat-on his back and look straight up, when he wi!l beable to discern some fine mansions about half way up to heawen. It is supposed the inmates use baloons in order to rexch home, particularly on lodge nights when it is somewhat difficult to climb Jacob’s ladder. Oa a hill to the north of town a deep’ grodve has been hydraulicked from top to bottom, possibly to be utilized for a toboggan slide with an ice palace at the top, soon as they can procure ice from Truckee, There is an efticient fire department with plenty of husky boy to “run mid de masheen.” Take it all in all Nevada Oity. is a desirable place in which to live, full of enterprising, progressive people, all looking healthy and happy, and.there are more beautiful girls to the Square foot (hope the compositor won't.make me say “with a square foot”) in Nevada City than in any other town in California, except ‘Iruckee. 20 Oe Want to Stop the Red Dog. The anti-miners of Sutter county are ‘threatening to bring injunction. proceedings against the Red Dog hydraulic mine below You Bet. The mine has a first-class dam that effectually restrains the debris from entering Greenhorn creek and Bear river, and has been operating under a permit granted by the U. 8. Debris Commission under the restrictions of the Caminetti Act. Tonight's Lecture. Rev. B. Dent Naylor of Grass Valley will deliver an interesting lectare at the Methodist Church this evening on “Gladstone, England’s Grand Old Man.” Mr. Naylor isan able speaker and a large audience should greet him. In ediihection with the lecture there will ' musical program. Lecture will begifi ut 8 o’clock. The Railroad to Tahoe. D. L. Bliss, one of the projectors of the Truckee and Tahoe railroad, made a tour of inspection up the Truckee river this week, but could only get about two miles up the river on account of the snow. Mr. Bliss says it will probably be May Ist. before the. company can do anything in the way of grading or surveying. Do You Know Consumption is preventable? Louise Kane, alias Big Lou, alias Cornish Lou, the woman of the halfworld who died yesterday while being brought by stage to the county hospital from her disreputable den at Rocky Bar near Washington, had a history with a moral. ~ She was born forty-seven yéars ago, but most of her life is wrapped in mystery. Itis known that when nineteen years of age or thereabout she graduated from the State Normal School at San Jose with honors and that she subsequently taught school a little while in a lower country town. Then she married a young fellow vamed Miller, a clerk in the Capital hotelat Sacramento. Fora brief period they enjoyed love’s young dream and seeméd destined to have a long°and happy. matrimonial career. But she soon became a giddy social butterfly, Her pretty face and winning ways made ‘her the center of attraction and her head was turned by the flattering attentions paid by other men. Miller was Of a domestic turn, and her frivolity was exceedingly. distasteful -to him. At first he reasoned with her, and when this course did not have the desired effect he rebuked her—mildly at first, then severely. Her proud spirit resented the harsh words he heaped upon her. In the end she defied him. Her misconduct became the the talk of the town finally, and ther their ways parted. She came to Nevada City and it did not take her long to reach the bottom of immorality’s toboggan slide. Shesued in the court here for a divorce from Miller and bad no trouble in obtaining it as the man made-no.contest. ee She flitted here, there and every where for a time, becoming notorious in many cities. In the eighties she went to Rocky Bar, an old-'ime outcasts retreat on the hank of the Seuth Yuba river balf a mile above the mining town of than it is now, and several hundred miners were employed along the river, ; Chappel, at Washington, as the result, Steele was tried and was convicted of murder inthe secouid degree. Several years later William Hyndman murdered William Searle in Henry Kobler’s store, at Washington, in a quarrel over this woman. Hyndman stabbed Searle in the groin with a jack-knife, and the latter bled to death. Hyndman was convicted of murder in the second degree. and was.sentenced to seventeen years’ imprisonment at San Quentin. The Supreme Court afterward reversed this decision on. a technicality and later on the case was dismiased. : i Lou is supposed to have but two re« lations living on the coast. They are her sisters and are said to be among the respected and respectable ladies of Sacramento, But they have long been as dead to ber and she to them and their names are unknown here. A post mortem and inquest were held at the hospital late yesterday. Dr. Muller conducted the former and Deputy County Coroner Gray the latter. What known, on account of her death, becanse she was to have returned ata later date and completed her narrative. The Frisbies came here in 1851, she then being apparently close to forty years of age. They first opened a saloon on Coyote street about where the Nevada City Gasworks now are. Busimess prospered with the twain. So they added a restaurant to the saloon and a little later opened a theater in connection with the other two. The combination was the swellest and most famous amusement resort and eating place in the mines. The theater played the greatest atfractions of the day at a dollar anda half a seat and the “standing-roomonly” sign was often hung ont. Suéh stars of the dramatic firmament as Edwin and J.
