Nevapa City DatLy TRANSCRIPT NAT. P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED.E. BROWN, Manager. TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION By fell,‘* ‘ . $6 Per Year . By Carrier, : ~ Delivered toany part of the city. Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City GREATNESS AND POVERTY. — A LARGE EXTENT a popular sentiment has prevailed that greatness and poverty are closely allied, and that the greater men have arisen from conditions of trial, poverty and unfavorable environment; that, therefore, poverty more develops genius than does —article of belief with many that pdyerty es This assumption is challenged by. Professor Gunton. in a recent paper in comfort, hence it has passed into an is the cause of greatness. which he points out that the instances of greatness ariaing out of poverty are really few. That some great men have developed in spite of poverty is conceded to be true, but none were put at the top by virtue of poverty. Examination-of this position reveals its soundness, and the truth that favorable conditions every where ‘have given us most of the resalte of genius, native ability and masterfal character. Evidently this must be true, else there is no need for intelligence, training, character culture and research. Gunton well says that everything that goes to make for civilization and human welfare has come into existence and increased with increased prodaction, diffusion and habitaal consumption of wealth, and that those who have failed to get wealth—though that is p too strongly, we think—who have failed ing it to have the: cultivating inflaence of its consumption, have remained the slaves and drudges of the race. Rather, we should substitute for “wealth” sufficient for the ‘satisfaction of the modest wants of life.” But as that critic well says: “In proportion as drudgery slackens, and the conditions where ‘every waking hoar is filled with struggle’ disappear, civilization advances, and as it advances bigher types of character, higher standards of morals, brosder altruism and jaster conceptions of life develop, and become the characteristicg of society; and great characters bacome their maltiplication.” #0 HumMerous as to bs Commonplace by ES ~ Edliortal Notes. “senator Gorman is again in it, primarily for himeelf, secondarily for dis party.
