Leeds’ devil has reappeared in New
Jersey for the first time since it warned
the pioneers of the approach of the civil
war. Back in the middle colonial days,
says the New York Herald, there lived
in Burlington, on the Delaware, the pioncer Quaker settlement of the county, a
woman known as “Mother Leeds,” accused of amateur witcheraft, and witchcraft was at its. height thereabouts at
that time. In. 1735 Mother Leeds gave
birth to a male ebild, whose father was
later said to have been none other than
the prince of darkness.
The child was normal at birth, but: before. the termination of the tempestuous
night of its arrival horiifiedsseveral old
crones about the bedside of .
gathered
Mother Leeds by assuming an elongated, .
serpentlike body, cloven hoofs, the head j arrested last night by Marshal Tompfa horse, the-wings of a bat and the'y, A .

the horrible creature turned. to a dusky
brown, and after bepummeling its mother
and her terrified companions it. flew up

and made for the forest. For some years
afterward belated travelers, while crossing -the pines, heard and saw it. The
pine folks, whose experiences were even
more terrible, attributed to it supernatural powers such as possessed by the black
witches of English folklore.
It turned the milk sour, lamed horses in
their stalls, dried up the cows, made sear
the Indian corn growing in the fields.

howling of dogs and the hooting of owls,
there could be no surer

those wild nights when merchant ships,
driving their prows iuto the sand, burst
asunder and distributed their*reight of
costly goods and human souls upun the,

“Epon such occasions Leeds’ devil was
seen in the companionship of a bexutiful,
golden haired woman in white, or yet of
some fferce eyed, cutlass bearing, disembodied spirit, of a pirate who two centuries ago had been wrecked upon the shore
of Cape May county as, plying from the
Spanish main, his galleon had gone to
destruction. Again this same son of satan shared his haunts with a headless

ANTI-MINING RING SUED.
Yuba County Supervisors Take Steps to
Recover Unlawfal Grabs.
The Supervisors of Yuba county on
yesterday passed an order instructing
District Attorney McDaniels to begin
suit against W. T. Phipps, Jobn C.
White and D. P. Durst, -officers of the
Anti-Debris Association, to recover
some $7,000 that it is alleged the Association bas unlawfully drawn from the
County Treasury. The District Attorney is ordered to employ W. H
Carlin-and E.A. Forbes on behalf of
the people to assist him in the prosecution. ‘ :
Sapervisors McGuire, Irvin, “Conrath and Mellon voted in favor of this
. action, John Stineman of Wheatland
. bsing the only member of the Board
‘to oppose it. Onthe question of making the appropriations they now seek
{to recover, Supervisors Conrath and
Mellon are the only members heretofore opposing them, Messrs. McGuire
j and Irwin having only recently seen
. the error of their way aud experienced
a change of heart.
It is claimed that the Association ofsers have from the tirst drawn in all
from the county about $80,000 that
they were not authorized by law.to
have, but that the claim for all of it
with the exception of the amount to
be sued for has outlawed. Most of it
has been taken at the rate of $300a
mouth. ;
It is said that Sutter, Colusa and
. Sacramento counties, all of which have
like Yaba been remorselessly bled for
. years by the ringsters, will take similar
. steps torecover. Ifthe courts should
. hold that the money has been illegally
. taken, it will prove a death-biow to the
Anti-Debris Association and a terrible
disappointment to Bub Devlinand the
other lawyers who have for years beén
enjoyiug sweh a fat thing at the expense
ot the valley people.

BASEBALL AS SHE 1S WROTE,
A Report That Will Make Byen the
~ Cranks Grin,
‘This is the way the baseball reporter
of a neighboring county recently told
his story of a game: “The sensation of
ths gam3cam3 in tha fifth. Adist es
sayed to steal his domicile on a passed
ball, and plowed through the mad ina
frantic slide only to be shut off by'a
from the central garden. Fulton accomplished two clever running purloins, and the diminutive Luiz, who
played short in Long’s place, madetwe
great catches and robbed Lunn of a hit
by knocking downa hard drive. For
two innings both sides sparred for an
opening. Five of the six foreigners
went ont on weak insects. On the
other side, Miller cricketed the ball
aud meandered down to second, and
Snow drew a base. McCollum advanced Johnson to second by a votive
offering, but the husky catcher blundered around the second sack when
Fulton went out and was chased to
death between the two bases, winding
up with a mud-spattering slide into
Lunn at the saucer. In the eighth
Sullivan drew the initial for an introduction and slid to the next on Blencoe’s roller. A moment later, on
Davies’ sharp ray to Flager, he was
ciught trying to steal the third baseman’s watch, and the side was retired
on half pay. In the ninth Matteson
marred the game by a foible by overlooking Hali’s grounder, but McGinnis, after a 120-yard hurdle grabbed
Hoyt’s short bee, ending the game and
rounds up the percentage ladder.”

NEW RACE OF GIANTS.
Monsters of Humanity In the South
. Polar Regioas.
Some papers are exploiting photographs
of a race of giants said to have been discovered by Dr. Frederick A. Cook, who
has just returned from an exploring expedition to the south polar regions. The
existence of such a race has always been
denied by scientists, but Dr. Cook, it is
said, has not only seen and talked with
them, but brings back photographs to
prove beyond argument that the biggest
race of human beings in the world is to
be found in the frozen south, The monstrous forms of both the men and women

is like watching a herd of antelope skim
over the greund. Only their upright position; with their scanty goats’ skins flying in the wind and the flourish of their
clubs and bows and arrows, shows that
they are men instead of belonging to the
lower animals. Dr. Cook is going to
write a full scientific account of ‘these
people.
