TusoaLoosa, Ale., Aug. 15—A mob of
about fifty men entered the jail before
daylight this morning, determined to
lynch Henry Pratt, colored, charged
with attempted assault on Sallie Dice,
@ little white girl. Sttriff Kyle was
sleeping at the jail. The mob entered
his room, slipped a pistol from beneath
his head and awoke him with a demand
for the keys to the cell containing the
prisoner. After some parleying the
Sheriff worked himself to a closet,
seized a loaded shotgun and told the
mob that they must kill him before
they could get the prisoner, In the

the jail and dispersed. It is rumored

To read a person’s character from bis
face isan accomplishment which few
possess, but which many would like
tohave. The study is an absorbingly
interesting one, and has not only an
entertaining, but a practical side as
well. An article on the subject will
shortly be published in ‘the Ladies’
Home Journal, giving careful details
regarding the traits of character indicated by the different features of the
face.

Santa Rosa, Aug. 15—Mrs. Elizabeth P. Alexander, who died in this
city yesterday, just before ber death
supervised the writing of her own obituary. She dictated, while her sister
wrote, and at the completion of the
task, the dying woman read the notice
and expressed her approval. The obitUary contained a number of scriptural
quotations and Christian lessons which
the dying woman wished given to the
world in the notice of her death. She
expired shortly after the task was completed. Mrs. Alexander was born in
Canada and was 64 years of age.

Santa Rosa, August 15—A gold
watch that was stolen nenrly two years
ago from Miss Nina Mallory was re—
turned ‘to her yesterday by mail, according to the predictions of a local
. fortane teller. On Christmas Eve, 1899,
Miss Mallory was the hostess at a home
party. She removed her watch, fear—
ing to drop it during the progress cf
the games, and laid it on a table. Later
when she sought it, it had vanished.
There was no effort made to search the
gueste, and the watch was given up for
lost. Miss Mallory conéulted a gypsy,
however, and the fortune-teller predicted that the watch would be returned to her in just so many months,
and that it would come through the
mail. The predictions were exactly
verified. With the watch, also, came
money to pay for needed repair.
