Weather Talk.
A word or so about the weather,
It is always. a handy subject. No matter whether it is hot or cold, wet or
dry, people like to talk about it. Our
hot wave has been one of the chief
topics of conversation for. several
weeke, and although it is not exerCising the mercury as much as it did,
the average person is glad when he, or
she, sees “the sun go down.” A little
time; a little more patience; and the
gentle rains will again commence to
fall on the just and the unjust. We
almost forgot the main object of our
item in “our burst of eloquence,”
namely, to state that the thermometors about town today “behaved” pretty well, and a little breeze kept astir.

A Good idea.
The Tulare Register says: J. B.
Beckwith has struck an idea that enables him to sleep in extreme comfort
no matter bow hot the night. Half an
hour before retiring he takes a sprinkler and some clean water and sprinkles the bed nicely and evenly and not
soppingly and by the time he gets into
it most of the moisture has evaporated,
leaving the bed nice and cool and very
inviting to Morpheus. Good idea and
does not cost a cent.

Vast Project Proposed By the
Southern Pacitic.
According to the Truckee Rey ublican, the Southern Pacific Company has
a big project in view which will do
away with4he snow sheds on the monuntain division.
The proposition has been talked of
before, bat this time they already have
supplies on hand. for the surveyor’s
camp and the survey will: be commenced as soon as Locating Engineer
W.E. Eades arrives, which” will be
about the middle of the month. He
is under H. Hood, the chief engineer of]
the company.
It will take several months for him
gets through and reports it will’be definitely known whether or not the
tunnel will be constructed. The plan
is to start from Cold Stream and come
out at Soda Springs. The distance
would be about. five miles. Such a
tunnel wou!d shorten the toad, do away
with the sheds and lessen the grade,
but on the other hand it would coat
about $5,000,000, besides disadvantages
on account of pure air running through
such long tunnels, :
