LACK OF DBTAILS
Of the Great Battles That Are Now Going
on in China.
"One of the strangest facts in connection with the late events in China is
thé paucity of news received from the
scene of the present conflict.” The battle of Pei Tsang tock place Sunday
morning, and all our knowledge of it is
contained in three brief telegrams.
Even the Shanghai newsmakers seem
to be powerless to give us any details
of the great engagement. There are a
number of correspondents in China.

and the great newspapers of the world
have not lost their spirit of enterprise,
but nevertheless it is true that the
world isin ignorance of the details of
one of the most important battles of
recent times. There is either a strict
censorship upon the correspondents,
or the allied commanders have agreed
to the saying attributed to Lord Wolseley, that the newspaper correspondents
are the pest of modern armies, and left
them all at Tien Tsin. The lack of
news is undoubtedly due toan understanding among the allies, who realize
that information. given’ to the world
means information given to the Ohinese. :
Viewed in that light the silence of
the correspondents is an argument
against the assertion that there was
dissension among the commanders of
the allies. The argument is reinforced
by General Chaffee’s dispatch, received
today, which indicates that there was a
thorough understanding among the
differe it forces, and that the advance
was begun in accordance with a welllaid plan. : .
