Last evening about 7 o'clock Chris, MalJon, O. O. Howard and Frank H. Bell, wh: were returning from a trip to the English Mountain mine, met with a rather serious accident,. They had reached the top of the Sugar Loaf grade, near this city, when the horses turned to the right, near the water trough, and one of fhe hiud wheels went of the edge of the road where a culvert crosses , At.the same time the forward wheels went into a ‘‘chuck hole,” and the sudden ja: threw the driver, Chris. Mallon, over the dashboard and between the horses. This frightened the horses and they started tu run down the hill. Two wheels_passed over Mallon, who was badly bruised about the body and had his face cut also. As the lines were dragging on the ground there was no chance ot stopping the team, so Bell and Howard jumped from the rockaway. The former struck upon his head and shoulder, causing the dislocation of his shoulder, Mr: Howard landed squarely on his feet and escaped . @ uuhurt. It was at first feared that Mr Mallon had sustained very serious injuries, as he was hardly. able to walk without the assistance of his comrades, who accompanied him to his home on Nevada street. Mr. Bell then went to the residence o! Dr. Hunt, near by, where Drs, Hunt and Dr. Hunt also .attended Mr. Mallon. ‘The injured men were beth feeling very sore today, but will soon be all right. The team, which belongs to James Hennessey, ran to the stable on Broad street, where they stopped. The hind -axle broke as they were passing C. E. Ashburn’s residence on upper West Broad street. One ct the wheels was thus separated from th vehicle, which from that point on went bumping and dragging down the street, the noise and clatter causing people to rur from houses and stores to learn the cause. ‘Tne runaway caused considerable excite ment and for awhile conjectures were rife a: to what-had happened ‘to the gentlemen who had the rig. One spring of the rotkaway was broken, an axle snapped off, the top cmeackedy busides ather damage Te i Jucky for the gentlemen above aaa thai th : accident did not result more seriously, as at the time it happened it was quite dark.
