(: by one, the pioneers of California, whose biographies are fnoterwoven with the early history of Nevada county, are dropping off and are joining their early-day associates who have preceded them to the eternal world. The history of Nevada county pioneers always furnish good momoranda for very interesting reading matter, as our local people and others throughout the State always feel a deep personal interest in these heroes who helped to mould the pioneer history of this famous county. Ps In the pagsing df Addison E, Head, who died at San Francisco last week’ the State, as well as Nevada county, loses one of its most respected and widelyknown pioneer citizens. Many years ago Mr. Head was a prominent figure in mining and other enterprises in this section, and was one of the band of hardy tollers who sought wealth in this county in the latter fifties, and later in the silver mines of Virginia City, Nev. Daring the fifties, Mr. Head, with the late Senator George Hearst, Joe Olark, Robert Morrow as associates, formed a party of miners who engaged in mining operations on Gold Flat, near this city, for some time. They afterwards mined at a point on Deer Creek, a few miles above here,’and were the original discoverers of the quartz lode, which is now known 68 the Lecompton mine and which is oneef the most promising mines in operation in this district. Mr, Head and bis party of miners were also joined later by Chas. E, McElvy, one of Nevada county’s best known citizene, who worked with them some time. _ In 1859, when the Washoe mining excitement broke out, Mr. Head, with his companions, were among the first to visit that section and later returned with assays of ore from there. which caused great excitement among the miners who were then here. Every Nevada Oityan who was in this section at about this time will remember these old-timers as being among the leading citizens of this city and identified with the success of all local enterprises. At one time Mr. Head was engaged in the botel business here with a Mr. Taylor and conducted the Metropolitan Hotel, which occupied the site where the New Union Hotel now stands, the firm name being Head & Taylor. Mr. Head and hie partners were quite suecessful in their mining adventures in the i State of Nevade. When they left here for the silver mines their combined capital would not buy a plug of tobacco and they were compelled to borrow money, but afterward all became wealthy. Shortly after Head returned to this city he married Mise Rebecca Burnett, who with ber parents lived in a dwelling which stood on the site now occupied by the Annex of the National Hotel. From here Mr. Head removed to San Francisco, but still continued to invest in miuing stock and amassed a good fortune. He also invested considerable wealth in real estate at the metropolis and retained his splendid financiering ability and business enterprise up toa few months ago. Onlya sbort time ago a prominent citizen of this city, while walking on Grant Avenue, eame across Mr. Head who was superintending the reconstruction of a business establishment owned by him, with as much agility as any expert contractor of younger years. Of-_the four who were partners together in early days—Head, Hearst, *Olark and Morrow—only one, Robert Morrow, now survives. Mr. Morrow is president of the Sutter Street Railway.Oo. and a man of wealth and influence. Mr. Head was a native of New York, seventy-three years of age. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Rebecca H. Head, and a daughter. Personal Mention; A Bad Affair. W. Heath is over from French Cor-. ' ral. Nevapa City DaiLy TRANSGRIPT Last’Saturday evening there was a@ Hoos re. The fortress was practically demolished and the commander was taken prisoner. . Small boats were sent’ in the inner harbor in search for gunboats and great excitement prevails. Militia men are coming from all directions. _ Great Britain subjects crowded the American Legation asking for protection. : Troops continue to concentrate at La Guayra. © Measures are being taken to resist if foreign troops land. The belief is general that Germany and Great Britain are trying to force the United States to define the Monroe doctrine. Four land explosions alarmed the city last night. The British marines landed at castle Libertidor and blew up the subterranean prison cells with dynamite and burned all wooden. buildings around the castle and carried away everything else. They afterward reembarked. DEATHOF YOUNGMAN nferesting News lems Kendrick Gurrier Found. 0! in a Brief Way for Busy Readers. As long as they are eo well made that they pass without question, the public generally will take little interest in the matter, The United States this sear produced forty-three million barrels of apples.
