Christmas ‘‘News Letter.”’
The Christmas number of the San Frarcisco News Letter, just received, is one
of the handsomest holiday numbers ever
issued. It contains one hundred and twelve
pages and is filled with the best work of
California artists and writers. The cover
is a superb affair in colors, and there are
twenty full-page illustrations furnished especially for this number by as many. leading’ artists of San Francisco. Stories,
poems, articles about society people and on
many important social, religious, and industrial topics, and also a musical composition for the banjo, are among its leading features. Every Californian should
send a copy of this magnificent publication
to some friend at a distance. It may be
had from any newsdealer.

It had been said that Mayor-elect Sutro
Amid the
enthusiasm which followed his remarkable
ovation at the ballot boxes, Mr. Sutro said
he intended to devote his salary during the
entire term to works of charity. The expectations raised by. this announcement

wait upon the new Mayor immediately upen
his induction into office. Now Mr. Sutro
says he does not intend to devote his salary
to charity. He purposes expending it in
employing an extra clerk in his office. In
other words, the Mayor elect does not intend to give his whole attention to city
matters, and is going to turn them over to
a clerk,
