PeCad. MSeSeus eecu THE ‘TRANSCRIPT. Established Sept. 6, 1380, by Nat. P. Browx & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA 00. CALIFORNIA BROWN & CALKINS. > Proprietors FRIDAY.. ... 06 DEC. 4, 1897. soa THE PEOPLE LIKE IT. It now seems quite possible, if not probable, that the United States Senate may accept "President McKinley’s “eurrency plan in which he proposes the destruction of the “endless chain” system by which gold is drawn out of the Treasury, and a gradual transfer of the.gold responsibility to the national banks of the country, in conjanction with an increased circulation on their part. Prior to the presentation of the President's simple and apparently feasible plan it was believed that nothing could be offered which would be accepted by the silver element, in the Senate, unless a freecoinage proposition were attached to it. The unanimity of popular sentiment in , favor of the Presidenit’s plan, however, seems likely to lead this element of the Senate to assume an attitude toward the proposition similar to that with which they accepted the protective features " of the tariff bill, permitting it to pass because of their recognition of its porularity witb the people, ee AN INTERESTING SHOWING. The Mexican “financiers” who are throwing up their sombreros in honcr of Mr. Bryan would probably be surprised to know that the increase in money in circulation in the United States since Mr. Bryan’s nomination, 17 months ago, is double the entire amount of money existing in the Republic of Mexico. The total money of that country, whose financial system Mr. Bryan urges us to adopt, is $106,888,000, of which $97,000,000 is in silver coin, $5,000,000 in gold, and $4,000,000 in uncovered paper; while the actual increase of the money in circulation in the United states since the beginning of the month in which Mr. Bryan was nominated is $211,359,338. ENCOURAGING CUTLOOK. Painful as the fact may be to the croakers who are finding fault with the operations of the Dingley law, there is prospect that it will produce a surplus daring the present month. Its actual earnings, omitting the sums received on account of the Pacific Railroad sa _e, were, during the first half of the month, jast about equal to the expenditures, and itis probable that when the: December figures are made upthey will bring a New Year’s present of a surplus for the month of December. Dn. Sze, the appropriately named astronomer of the Flagstaff observatory, claims to have discovered 500 new double stars. Can it be possible that they are only ‘ordinary stars and that he was in such a condition that he could see double? \ Hetzn Gouin has purchased a mystic crystal sphere which is said to enable one to'see into the future. It ought to be a handy thing to have around the house when the wheat market is lively, as most of the money is cleaned up on “futures.” CHOICE CHRISTMAS MEATS. The Union Market Supplies Customers With the Very Best. “Good meat at all times is the rule at Colley Bros.’ Union market on Commercial street, and this is why their customers are always satisfied. For the holidays'they have made special provisions and will have on display the finest lot of meat of different kinds to be found anywhere. Stull-fed beef and ; Gilt Edge saloon at the corner of Broad . : mutton and corn-fed pork do not give the butcher as much profit as that fed in the usual manner, but Colley Bros. intend to give their patrons a Christmas benefit and will serve this week only choice, selected stock. Roasts fit for a king, and steaks and chops the} sight of which would make an epicure’s heart beat with delight and his mouth water with gastronomical anticipations can be obtained at their market. Their Public Taste hams and bacons and pure leaf lard are of the finest quality. If you want something really nice for your holiday dinners call on Colley Bros., the pioneer butchers. 423-2t It Is No Lottery To buy Christmas gifts if you go to the right store. But buy one of those nice Silk Muffiers or Reefers. At Carter & Jobnston’s. é da13 Brvsu, conib and tray sets—beanties. Cali early and pick one out, at Dickerman's. ag —— FALSE. eet CONDEMNE we The Willows Promoter of Wednesday offers the following sensible suggestions, the force of which will be admitted by every citizen: Onr county officers, one and all, and . ‘more especially the Board of Supervisors, fall into the error of going upon the outside whenever there is an occasfon to have work done for the county. This is clearly wrong, and the. excuse that they are doing it forthe best interests of the taxpayer is not well taken and as a rule not well received by their constituents. An official-cannot have the welfare of his town or county at heart who calls upon artisans from another ‘county ‘to do the work which properly belongs to his constituents. The official is put into office by the very people whom he is working against by -his actions, and the taxes they. pay go toward paying his salary, and they are therefore worthy of his consideration. A private citizen has a much better right to place his patronage where he will, bat an official, doing the business of a county, should never go upon the outside for anything that can be man will work unless he makes a profit, whether he comes from a great city or belongs in the county, and that profit if kept at home will benefit the county in more ways than one, but if. taken away will beseen or felt no more in the receive careful consideration by all officials und the idea of false economy now in. vogue should be stopped, THE RIGHT PLACE TO BUY Your Fancy Groceries-and Provisiocs fcr Christmas.
