OUR GLORIOUS ‘WEATHER
OME shrewd observer has said that Californians have to
go abroad to gain a proper appreciation of the glories
of their own climate. [= truth every Californian does
return from a trip in other lands with an added respect for
the climatic beauties of his own State. One poet has called
our climate a benison, another a dream; in fact, it is a delic—
ious, reality. Here nature puts on her sweetest moods, while
t With the sea on one side and
the snow-capped mountains on the other, the Golden State
sprawls lazily and luxuriously along the coast for nine hunfruiting in riotous profusion,
dred miles, embracing in its length more picturesque scenes
and a wider range of production than is to be found anywhere
else on the planet.
How particularly delightful the weather is just now,
While many of the people of the Eastern States have been
experiencing an intense cold wave and are ice-bound, and
others are suffering from the effects of blizzards and tornados
the people of California have been enjoying beautiful sunshine and balmy weather. Here in the mountains we have
frost ip the mornings, to be sure, but the days have been
perfectly grand and have helped to make Christmas week
doubly enjoyable. In the valley sections of the State the
weather has been like Springtime. The air is full of warmth
and color, with just enough hint of frost in the early mornings to make it bracing and exhilarating without bringing a
sense of chill. In the gardens the flowers are blooming, and
the young grass is weaving a green carpet on the hills. The
lemon and orange trees are breaking into bloom, while the
almond buds are swelling. Everywhere people are enjoying
life in the open air, and tomatoes, green peas and string
eans grace the market stalls.
where spring lamb and green peas ripen together with turkey and cranberries, and the red apple and the yellow orange sport in the same groves. The whole aspect of nature
is a perpetual invitation to eat, drink and be merry.
Palestine was the land of promise for the Jews. California is the land of fulfillment. We have got everything
here to make life rich and content. Even the waters yield us
their finest products,
This is not a boast—it is a faint portrayal of the truth.
And being the truth, why should we not speak it ere saying
grace before eatiug our New Yea1’s dinner, which, we trust,
all will enjoy, even those to whom fortune has been unkind
if nature has not. A&,Tiny Tim says, “God bless us all,
every one,” and may good digestion wait on appetite, for full
stomachs make thankful hearts. And while we are wishing
one another a Happy New Year, let us not forget the Giver
of the Feast, the Bestower of those blessings so bountifully
showered upon us.
It is surely a great country}

A mixed jury, composed of six men
and six women sat in Chicago for the
trial of some child offender. This is
the first time the mixed jury has been
tried inthe United States. The six
men on the first ballot voted sclid for
the defendant and the six women were
solid for plaintiff. The verdict taken
into the court was twelve for the plaintiff, showing that the women had captured the men. It has always been so
since Eve entered the Garden of Eden.

An Indiana inventor declares that
he has perfected a steam engine that
requires no boiler. If this era of invention keeps up we shall in time have
