NEVADA CITY; CALIFORNIA, WEDNESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 6, 1893,
Established Sept. 6, 1860, by N. P. Brown & Co.

DAILY TRANSCRIPT,
TRUTHFUL WORDS
From One Who Thoroughly Understands
THE TRUE SITUATION ARIGHT.
He Gives a Scoring That Every Resident in This City Should Take
Home to Himself.
Epirok Transorter :—The Midwinter
Fair is rapidly approaching completion and
the counties, States, Nations and concessioners who intend making exhibits ‘are
*‘getting a move on,””
What is Nevada county doing?
Does any one know ?
_ Now, don’t let us-get left again, like we
did at the World’s Fair.
Nevada county was not in it there,
The mining cowntics were not near so
well represented as the fruit-growing section of the State.
To let the cat out of the bag the California building was a great big ‘‘ad.” for the
fruit-growers of our State, q
We are not jealous ef their success, but
we are ashamed of ourselves,
We get up on our hind legs and ‘howl
around our homes of the great mining district we are in.
That it’s the banner mining county of the
State, quote.the amount of gold shipped and
the probable amount left in the hills and
then we go to bed and to sleep,
How would it work if we let the outside
world know of these wonderful resources ?
To a man up a tree it looks plain that if
you have goods to sell you must make it
known,
What would be’ thought of a man who
would come to our town and start business
in a garret, put his wares in a dark corner, .
‘close the blinds and wait for trade, and not
‘advertise in the local papers ?
He'd be dubbed a crank and a curiosity,
‘Yet this is the position Nevada county holds
today.
Why, half the people in Frisco don’t
know where Nevada county lies,
The East don’t know-anything about us.
Go Fast and get acquainted with people
and they ask you if you live near Los Angeles or San Diego., They are astonished
whom you tell thom. gion 1i-county, The general impression is mining
in California is played out, That it is all
done in Colorado and: Montana, Now,
right here is where we are outclassed by
Colorado, They are a rustling; live lot of
people, who shout Colorado from sunrise to
sunset, but they get away from home to do
it and that is what counts. They head off
the capital that might come to our section
if we were as well known as they, Put Nevada City into Colorado and inside of one
year there would be a population of 10,000,
Colorado was in it largely at the Columbian
Exposition, Had the most attractive mineral exhibit in the Mining building. Had
a mineral palace in the Women’s building
that attracted more attention than anything
there, Their State building was good. It
was next to the California building, but unlike it, it was not ‘an ‘‘ad,”’ for one section
‘of the State. It wasa home and place of
reception for Colorado people,
Ispeak of these things to show the ne‘eessity for our making a grand exhibit at
Sunset City, and one worthy of Nevada
county. i
WE Know all about our wonderful resources but other people don’t,
We have any amount of goed, undeveloped property for sale but the capital is not
here to handle it. We must get it from the
outside, There is a way to do this and that
is to wake up and put alittle enthusiasm into our people, cas
This county, with its abundance of timber,
unlimited water supply and great gold fields,
set down in I!linois or Colorado would have
an hundred thousand people in it before you
could bat your eye.
Why can’t we do it ?
Because we are too sow !
There is no use denying it, we are as a
back number.
We lack energy and enterprise.
Let us get out of the rut, and now is the
opportune time.
Come to the front and assist Messrs, Dorsey, Zeitler and Mainhart in making known
our great natural wealth at the Midwinter

The Band Members’ Nathes and the
Musical Program That Will
Be Presented.
is
oe
The Pythian Band of this city is perhaps
the best brass band our town has ever had,
at least that is the general opinion, ‘Their
music is very melodious and pleasing, while
the selections rendered are generally appropriate and ‘‘ catchy”, tunes, a fact that is
duly appreciated by the majority of people
who are fond of music, but which is so
often overlooked by many non-professional
bands. Under the instruction of their very
competent leader the members are constantly
improving, as is evidenced on each succeed—
ing appearance of the-band. Several of the
players are musicians of considerable experience, and in view of the fact that the
band members are nearly all hard-working
miners, their musical performances are deserving of more than passing praise.
We give below the names of the eighteen
perscns comprising the band, with the instrument each one plays: «
John Carveth, (leader) cornet,
Thomas Granville, cornet.
William Veal, cornet:
Edward Ninnis, cornet.
John Pascoe, cornet.
Charles Carveth, solo alto,
William Clemo, 1st alto,
W. H. Sandow, 2d alto,
James Chinn, 3d alto.
John Blamey, 1st trombone.
N. W. Bennett, 2d trombone.
Dan Dower, 3d trombone,
Joseph Roberts, tenor,
John Pedlar, baritone.
Thomas Veal, Ist tuba.
C. N. Harry, 2d tuba.

Just An Inkling of Some of the Con.
templated Enterprises That ©
Will Be Inaugurated.
—_—
Next spring there will be. booming times
in Nevada City, and nothing can prevent it.
The Electric Railroad will be built from
this city to Marysville. The projectors of
the enterprise assure us that it will be commenced in the spring,
The Telephune Line will be built from
this city te Auburn, connecting us with
every town of importance. on the Pacific
Coast. Local exchanges will be put in
all over this city.
Many new and large mining enterprises
willbe started in the spring, giving employment to several hundred more men.
The Gold Bank Tunnel, tapping all the
mines in this and the Grass Valley district,
will be gotten under full headway by spring,
This is the grandest and will be the most
profitable scheme ever inaugurated on the
‘Pacific Coast. It will drain the Novada
City and Grass Valley mines and open up
hundreds of new ledges, giving employment
to an army of men.
ried en wholly by Iastern capitalists, who
will tind it the best investment they ever
made.
There will be hundreds of visitors from
the very opening of the Midwinter Fair,
who will come to see what we have here,
There will be no small number who will
invest’ in our mines and lands, for they will
find out that we have not only therichest
gold mines in the world, but as good landa
asany in the State. We know that our
climate is unexcelled on the face of the’
earth, and that will be demonstrated to
the strangers when they arrive, aaa
The Nevada City mines are today turning out more gold thanever known before
in their history, and it will be steadily increased as the new projected enterprises are
inaugurated.
There are more men employed in our
mines than ever known before, . While
there is a,surplus of miners here at-the pres~
ent time, there will, unquestionably, be a
scarcity of them in the spring.
Several new gravel mines will be started
up in the spring.
