The Miners’ Association.
Recently the Nevada County Miners’
Association , levied anassessment of one
dollar.on the members. Of the 500 notices
of assessment sent out only 22 have been
responded to. This apathy on the part.of
members is doubtless dus to the dissatis—
faction which prevails regarding the manner
in which the Miners’ Association: is being
used as @ power to advance. the political
interests of certain. parties. People are
willing to help the mining cause, but they
object to giving financial aid to anything
that is being made to subserve the politieal
ends of afew men. Were it not for this
feeling we believe most, if not all, of the
members would send in their dollar.
' 1¢ is to be regretted that such a state iof
affairs exists, as it is very essential that the
organization should be kept up, and in order to do so funds are necessary.

A Dead Chinaman.
‘A Chinamen was found dead in a cabin
about a half mile south of Rough and Ready
yesterday. He wasan old fellow, andi it
is thought he died for want of food, \as
there was' nothing in the cabin to indicate
that he bad had anything to eat for some
time.

Evrror Transcript: The weather up
this way the past winter, so far, has been
disagreeable in the extreme; ‘nothing like it
in the weather line has occurred since Adam
and Eve wore fig-leaf aprons to -hide : their
nakedness from the Lord while sojourning
ni the Garden of Eden, at least so say the
old=timers of this:-zection.~
As astarter a cold: snap, with the speed
of a cyclone, whisked up by this place,
freezing everything solid. — Ditches were
frozen, which caused them to become blocked
with ice and siow, thereby breaking their
banks and doing considerable damage ‘to
other property.. Iron water pipes were
bursted wherever exposed to the weather,
and the South Yuba river, at the timé, was
frozen over in many places, the ice being
thick enough for the boys to skate on,
which has not happened in many~ years
before.’ Even now, while writing, I can
feel a cold chill meandering its way up my
spinal column at the thought of how cold it
was at the time. After the cold spell had
partially subsided, snow —and__rain—commenced falling in about equal proportions,
present time. Just how much longer such
detestable weather is-going to continue is a
question that is now agitating the minds of
tuose of my apes who have small wood
piles.
The-outlook for mining here on the river
the coming summer is not particularly
bright just now, although there is no telling
At the Eagle Bird mine the new company
are now employing fiom twenty-five to
thirty men‘in prospecting the mine. Should
a new pay shoot of ore be discovered in the
near future it is more than probable that
the present force in the mine will be more
than doubled and the mill started up sgain.
At the-Yuba the mine is now clear of
water and sinking commenced in the shaft.
It is to be sunk 200 feet deeper, and the
work, so 1 am informed, is to be done by
. Chinamen.
Four-men-are now employed at-the Blue

In old ag: infirmities and weakness hasten.
to close the gap between us and the grave,
Happily scientific research and pharmacal

a reliable means of ameliorating the ailments
incident to declining years, and of renewing
waning physical energy. Its name is Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, a widely comprehensive remedy in disease, and: an inestimable blessing to theelderly, the feeble and

A Narrow Escape.
Last Monday while Wm. Cassidy was
getting wood out of a deep snow bank in the
rear of H. W. Meyer's saloon, he had’ narrow escape from death, says the Truckee
Republican. It was mecessary to dig down
into the snow about fifteen feet to get te the
wood, and when Cassidy had reached that
depth the hugh bank of snow éverhead came
tumbling over inte the excavation. Fortunately Cassidy was in such a position when
it came down on him that his head was left
above the snow. He screamed for help
which soon came. After being dug out it
was found that he was not injured beyend
having a-fow bruises:
