A Pew -Inducements Which Nevada
County Offers to. Settlers.
First—Large areas of fertile lands, secur—
ed by Government patent, can be parchased
at such reasonable figures that afew hundred
dollars is sufficint, to.pay for a small farm.
Second—The standard fruits grown in
this county are the finest of their varieties
grown in the world. They are of a superior flavor_and havea firmness of textyre
that gives thei-better shipping and keeping
qualities than those grown at lower altitudes
and they find a ready market at remundtative prices. : .
Third—The long summers permit of the
rotation of crops, and the raising of two and
even three different. crops from the sathe
land in a single season. ~ sy ‘
Fourth—There is a ready-market for
farm products at good prices. :
Fifth-There are excellent means of trans
portation to the railway penetrating the central portion of the county. aa
* Sixth-/There is an abundance of timber.
Seventh—Thereisan inexhaustible supply-of pure water, both for irrigating and
domestic purposes. : —“
Kighth—The temperature is mild, both in
summer and winter, and is. not subject to
sudden changes.
-Ninth—The climate will compare favorably with that of any other section of the
Pacific Coast, even with the most favored,
there being mo malaria with its resulting
ehills and fever, no violent winds, no fogs;
nor floods.
Tenth—The children reared in this cli“mate and at this altitude above the sea
usually aequire better physical constitutions, with more plumpness and firmness of
museular developmeut as well as color and
vitality_of the blood than those reared in
. the valley or even coast counties.
With this brief statement of. facts, however, let it bs understood that we do not
-elaim for Nevada county that it is a paraall
dise on earth, nor even the popular romance
of sub-tropical glories.
Nevada county lies a little north of the
eentral line of California, and contains~®
Pepiilation ef about 25,000. It extends
from the summit of the Sierra Nevada
“mountains, on the east line of the State,
westward-adistance of seventy miles to. the
Bacramento. Valley. It is from twelve to
twenty miles wide. The altitude is from
vation in the western or valley region. The
line of the Central Pacific Railroad ¢rosses
the. eastern boundary; and traverses the
southefn portion of»the county for many
miles. It then enters Placer county, follows
ing close to the southern boundary of Nevada county till near its western limit. The
Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad connects with the Central Pacific at Colfax and
extends thence north te the centralportion
of thescounty, passing through Chicago
Park, Grass Valley, and. terminating at
Nevada Qity—twenty-two miles from the
Central Pacific Overland. Railroad. The
eentralportions contain most of the rich
gold mines, including quartz, hydraufic and
placer mines together with, the upper portion of the Horticultural belt, while the
western or foothill regio@consists exclusive—
ly of agricultural and grazing lands. The
hortioultaral and agricultural section of the
eounty eomprises about 250,000 acres of
land, a large per centage of which is adapt~
ed to oultivation. The topograpy of the
eounty is such as to give variety to the pro
ducts, We grow successfully in Nevada)
county: Oranges, lemons, citrons, figss,
olives, apricots, plums, strawberries, black—
berries; raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts,
black walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, and
