Eunis is here in the interest of Henderson, Brown and Company of Sacramento. a OBO WILL EXTEND THE LINE, Relief Hill and North Bloomfield to’ Haye Telephone Communication. ‘The proposed telephone line from ‘Washington to Relief Hill and North Bloomfield, mentioned by the TaRnsoript the other day, will soon be a reality. Wire has been ordered for the line. and some of it sent up to Bloomfield today on the stage. From North Bloomfield to Relief Hill about three miles of wire will be required, and from Relief Hill to Washington it will-take five or six miles of wire. If the weather permits it is thought the line will be up and ready for service in abouttwo weeks. A long distance telephone will be put in at Bloomfield and also at Relief Hill. The people of those towns will then have the means of quick communication with the ouside world,.as they can talk with Nevada City, Grass Valley, Sacramento and other points. The charges made for the use of the local line wili go towards , aying the expense of maintainiog the line. 2 ome eo Fuserals This Afternoon. The funeral of the late Daniel A. Rich took place: from the Methodist Charch this afternoon under the auspiwas largely attended by friends of the deceased. The pall bearers were Wil‘liam -Fioyd, R.G. McCutchan, N. Web‘Eagye. The funeral of the young son of Mr. and Mrs. P.J. Hanley took place at 2 clock from the St. Canice Catholic @burch, many friends of the family attending. ' A Four-Story House. A. It will = ably end in chin-music. .; The weather bureau predicts increasing clouduess tonight and Friday. No storm in sight. Fischer Bros, of the Plazer grocer store gave a private dancing party last night to a number of friends, in the hall above their store. Mrs. George O. Gaylord gave an afternoon tea yesterday to a number of her friends at her home on Broad street. Next Monday the public school children will celebrate Washington’s Birthday, which falls on Tuesday, on which day there will be no school. There was alarge attendance at the Royal Dancing Club’s social hop last evening andall had a very Ion ree time. 4 ““isie Gray, the young » “dntietiter of Geo. A. Gray, while playing at the schoolhouse during recess this afternoon,.broke a bone in the right wrist. Five stamps are kept running at the Chapman Ranch mine on rock of excellent grade. When the new 380-horse power electric motor arrives from the East the owners of the mine will increase the number of stamps totwenty. A heavy steel wire cable 1000 feet long has been attached to the drum in the hoisting works at the Good Title mine, at Indiana Ranch. At the Stanford mine, now bonded to Hon. J. H. Neff and others, the shaft is being sunk another 100 feet. When this is done another level will be opened. John H. Pascoe and Miss Josie Durst will be joined in the holy bonds of matrimony at the M. E. Church on Sunday evening. That spacious building will not be half large enough to contain the people who would like to witness the ceremony. PETTY THIEVES, They Steal Handkerchiefs Chinese. Last evening two strangers visited the Ohinese store on ‘Broad street, oppositethe janction of Union street, and asked to see some handkerchiefs. From a one of the men stole two handkerchiefs, and later the other one purloined a box of them und started to leave the store. The Chinaman noticed the theft and following the men demanded the return of his property. Phis they refused to do and continued to walk fast, finally breaking into a run. Ah Head, the storekeeper, notified the officers, but could not give a very good description of the men. Officer Kilroy afterwards arrested two men on suspicion. The Chinaman identified one of them but was not positive as to the other one. The strangers were locked up in the city prison. They are hard-looking cases and are no doubt professional thieves. The man arrested for stealing bandkerchiefs gave the name of William Carter. His trial on a charge of petty larceny was set for 4 o’clock this afternoon. The other man was released from custody on condition that he leave town in twelve hours. ‘I'he shoplifter was sent to-jail for thirty days. ome Mahara’s Minstrels. The Mahara Brothers, who bring their Mammoth Minstrel Company to Nevada City for two nights commencing next Monday are among the most progressive managers in their line of business who are today catering to the amusement-loving public, leaving the old rut in which so many similar organizations have been traveling, they have taken an entirely new road. They introduce, what the publicuare clamoring for, real novelties, and from the rise to the fall of the curtain, they follow each other in rapid succession. Many artists of a national reputation are on their programme, which proves that they have only the best in that line. In their Company are sivgers, who one cannot but be surprised at, to find on the minstrel stage, and their voices are well wortby of being placed in a much higher line of entertainment, and nothing but the most flattering reports come in from all places that have had the pleasure of seeing them. Will Purchase New Goods. Miss Tetrean lett today for San Francisco, where she will. purchase a new stock of millinery and other goods for W. H. Crawford’s store. All she latest stylesin hats and bonnets, trimmings, etc. will be’ procured, also the most fashionable patterus in dress goods, gloves, corsets and hosiery. Ihe new goods will be here next week. Reserve making your purchases u natil you have seen them. 1t A Bad Cut. While -chopping wood yesterday at his home near Rush creek, two miles west of town, Theodore Tobiassen, son of N. A, Tobbiassen, cut the instep of his foot so badly that it was necessary for the attending physician to sew fey the wound, Buek and family. While the proprietor’s back was turned. DISOREDIT ME STORY. Havy Ofials Not Not Decided as to How it Happened. Wasuinaton, Feb. 17.—The Navy Department entirely discredits the story from Key West regarding the cause of’ the explosion of the warship Maine. “The officials say there is no such thing . as’a percussion hole and that there are no eight-inch torpedoes. Such a’ hole as is described could only have been caused by the explosion of a shell inside the vessel. Secretary Long denies that Captain Sigsby sent a message saying that the explosion was caused by a torpedo. The Navy Department has received a dispatch from Admiral Sicard, in command of the North Atlantic Squadron, giving the details of a court of inquiry that has been appointed to investigate the disaster. GRASS VALLEY NEWS. A Day’s Record of the Doings of Our Neighbors. William Campbell, the Boston Ravine merchant, is visiting in Australia. The Grass Valley Minstrels will not play in Marysville, being unable to secure the theater for the desired date. They will go to Placervilleand Auburn instead. Mrs. Jobn Ryan, who ‘has been sick some time, is very lowand it is thought she will not live many days. J. M. Lakenan has returned from a trip to San Francisco. The delivery team of William Provis, the grocer, ran away this morning. William Clemo climbed into the: back end of the wagon and grabbing the lines succeeded in stopping the horses. In doing this courageous act he sprained one of his ankles. The hind axle of the wagon was Sprang and the barness broken. There is*some dissatisfaction over the police ordinance. In order to test public sentiment in the matter the
City Trustees will have petitions left at different places so that taxpayers can sign for or against the ordinance. Getting Ready to Assess. County Assessor Martin has all preparations nearly complete for beginning the assessment of property early next month, His chief deputy, T. H. Carr, and the young lady assistants in the office have been at work several weeks doing the preliminary writing. This year Mr. Martin will have but three deputies viz: T. H. Carr, Henry Schroeder and M. Dunkley. Deputy Rowe resigned some time ago and no one will be appointed to take his place. 0 pe ee Are at Smartsville. Major W. H. Heuer and Lieut. Herbert Dearkyne, of the Debris Commission, are at the Narrows at Smartsville inspecting the prelinminary work being done there preparatory to beginning active work on the proposed debris dams. Quitea crew of men are employed in excavating for the purpose of determining the depth to bedrock. —— --—_+ me. Accidents to Mechanics. -This forenoon John Hitchins, blacksmith at the Miners Foundry, mashed his left hand quite badly with a hammer while working on the boiler at the Texas mine. George Calahan, another employe of the above foundry, had his thumb mashed at the foundry yesterday. +++ «82 The Murder Trial. In the case of Thomas Evans, on trial in the Superior Court for the murder of Robert Holland, three more jurors were secured this forenoon, viz: L: Hyman. T. O. Randall, John Best. Later A. Salt Lake any day. ‘Utah’s rates are made by the surveyors of the Pacific coast compact, or, as it is more formally designated, the Board. of Fire Underwriters of the Pacifico. Recent events in San Francisco indicate that the compact may be disrupted. Fire Damp Explosion. Brronam, Prussia, February 17.—A terrible explosion of fire damp occurred this morning in a colliery near Hammerly. Twenty-seven bodies have been recovered and many other miners were injured. It is thought 650 persons were killed. : Will Be Cared For. Wasuinaton, February 17.—It is probable that.the families ‘of the victims of the Maine disaster will be cared for by the Government, “the same as the survivors of the Nipsic and Trenton, which were wrecked? off Lamoa. Representative McLellan of New York today introduced in the House a concurrent resolution appropriating $160,000 for this purpose. Buried With Public Honors, Havana, Feb. 17th—The dead from the wrecked warship Maine were, buried here today with public honors. The entire city is in mourning. Messages of Condolence. WasHineton, February 17.—General Blanco and the Mayor of Havana today wired messages of condolence to President McKinley regarding the Maine disaster. C. Feb. 17th—Captain Chas. Johnson, an old sea captain known all over the Pacific coast, was burned to death in a building here. Outlook Ominous. WasHinaton, February 17.—The out look is decidedly ominous. ‘The naval officials are preparing for emergencies. The suspicion that the destruction of the Maine was an act of treachery is gaining ground. Naval officers say +. that an accident ‘on the vessel ‘was practically impossible. The failure of Consul General Lee and Captain Sigsbee to state in their messages the cause of the explosion is causing much uneasiness in official circles.
