PETTY THIEVES,
They Steal Handkerchiefs
Chinese.
Last evening two strangers visited
the Ohinese store on ‘Broad street, oppositethe janction of Union street, and
asked to see some handkerchiefs.
From a
one of the men stole two handkerchiefs, and later the other one purloined a box of them und started to
leave the store. The Chinaman noticed the theft and following the men
demanded the return of his property.
Phis they refused to do and continued
to walk fast, finally breaking into a
run.
Ah Head, the storekeeper, notified
the officers, but could not give a very
good description of the men. Officer
Kilroy afterwards arrested two men on
suspicion. The Chinaman identified
one of them but was not positive as to
the other one. The strangers were
locked up in the city prison. They are
hard-looking cases and are no doubt
professional thieves.
The man arrested for stealing bandkerchiefs gave the name of William
Carter. His trial on a charge of petty
larceny was set for 4 o’clock this afternoon. The other man was released
from custody on condition that he leave
town in twelve hours. ‘I'he shoplifter

Mahara’s Minstrels.
The Mahara Brothers, who bring
their Mammoth Minstrel Company to
Nevada City for two nights commencing next Monday are among the most
progressive managers in their line of
business who are today catering to the
amusement-loving public, leaving the
old rut in which so many similar organizations have been traveling, they
have taken an entirely new road. They
introduce, what the publicuare clamoring for, real novelties, and from the rise
to the fall of the curtain, they follow
each other in rapid succession. Many
artists of a national reputation are on
their programme, which proves that
they have only the best in that line.
In their Company are sivgers, who
one cannot but be surprised at, to find
on the minstrel stage, and their voices
are well wortby of being placed in a
much higher line of entertainment, and
nothing but the most flattering reports
come in from all places that have had
the pleasure of seeing them.

ME STORY.
Havy Ofials Not Not Decided as
to How it Happened.
Wasuinaton, Feb. 17.—The Navy Department entirely discredits the story
from Key West regarding the cause of’
the explosion of the warship Maine.
“The officials say there is no such thing . as’a percussion hole and that there are
no eight-inch torpedoes. Such a’ hole
as is described could only have been
caused by the explosion of a shell inside the vessel.
Secretary Long denies that Captain
Sigsby sent a message saying that the
explosion was caused by a torpedo.
The Navy Department has received a
dispatch from Admiral Sicard, in command of the North Atlantic Squadron,
giving the details of a court of inquiry
that has been appointed to investigate
the disaster.

Change of Heart.
Cupyenne, Wyo., Feb. 17th—The Republican Stat? Committee has decided
to abandon the silver platform and indorse the St. Louis platform. This action is entirely unexpected and will
lead to several interesting political

The suspicion that the destruction of
the Maine was an act of treachery is

practically impossible. The failure of
Consul General Lee and Captain Sigsbee to state in their messages the cause
of the explosion is causing much uneasiness in official circles. Members
