Mining Hems.
Sentinel : A very rich strike was
meade in the Bonnie Bee mine this
. week, 200 feet in on the: main tunnel
which is being driven on a twelve foot
vein. A chute of ore was strack that
goes over $500 per ton and with each
subsequent round of holes the ore is
getting better, showing fine gold in
large quantities. Machine drills are
being used and great progress is being made in deyeloping the mine. As
soon as spring opens a ten stamp mill
will be put on the property. .
Development work is in progress at
the May Wlower gravel mine near
Forest Hill. Six men are employed.
Messrs. Browne, Rea and Hoffman
commenced to wash gravel at the Paragon pit at Bath, last Friday.
‘The leasers of the Dardanelles mine
. commenced to hydraulic last Monday.
At the Eelipse quartz mine the mill
is being rebuilt and a new hoist is be‘ing installed. L.1. Ogden, au experi_{enced millwright, has charge of the
work.
P. Espinaux, manager of the Ralston
Divide Gold Mining Oo., has returned
to the mine and put a force of men to
work on the Blacksmith claim where
very good prospects were developed
last fall. This claim may be worked
by drift or hydraulic process as further
prospecting will advise.

A Man In the House.
There is a young criminal lawyer in
Memphis, Tenn., who on the occasion
of his becoming of age began the celebration of his birthday in a way that
caused his household a great deal of
. consternation.
On the eve of the fete, shortly after
midnight, the young man’s family were
suddenly startled from their slumbers
by a loud voice in the house calling:
“There’s a man.in the house! There’s
a man in-the house!’
The valiant pater familias rushed
from his room, bearing in his hands a
heavy billet of firewood, to learn the
cause of fhe disturbance and to capture the intruder. His son was standing in the hall, shouting at the top of
his voice.
“Where’s the man?’ exclaimed the
old gentleman.
“Here, sir; here!” phoniliy replied the
young man. “This is he. At last I’m
twenty-one!’—Memphis Scimitar.
Piper Legends.
The Wends, who, we believe, are the
ancestors of the modern Prussians, are
the center of many legends. The Pied
Piper of Hamelin was a Wend; 80 also
was the piper of the Harz mountains,
who appeared so many days a year and
played unearthly tunes and whosoever
heard at once fell into a frenzy, from
which there was no escaping. All these
pied and weird pipers assembled once @
year at the Brocken, where there was a
general carnival, the arch fiend leading the concert on a violin, witches
rolling around and fiddling on the
skulls of horses and the pipers adding
the concert of their unholy instruments.—Chambers’ Journal.

’ Yerrific Thunder,
The largest rainfall on earth has been
recorded at Chera Punji, on the bay of
Bengal, but the most. violent thunderstorms ever observed are probably
those of French Guiana. At Cape Orange, some forty miles south of Cayenne, a French naval offieer saw the
rills of the coast hills turned into waterfalls by a cloudburstlike storm,
while the crashing thunder peals were
incessant and often almost deafening,
so much so, indeed, that some of the
sailors began to mutter long forgotten
prayers, probably thinking the day of
judgment near at hand.
No Cause For Care.
A Welsh editor had misspelled the
name of 2 famous poet of Wales.
“Why do you spell Liywarch Hen’s

“Why? Does he object?” asked the
editor.
“Opject!”. echoed: the other.
he has been dead 1,200 years.”

the editor.

{CHINESE MERRIMENT,
The New Year Season
Will Come to an
End Tomorrow.
For the past two weeks the local
Chinese colony has been the scene of
great merriment—from a Mongolian
standpoint. Tomorrew afternoon the
New Year festivities will be closed at
the Joss house with the usual amount
of ear-rending noise. The “show” will
open promptly at 2 o’clock, and “New
Ohinatown” will be lively for a few
hours. The contests for honor and
distinction that lie hidden in the
“bemb-catching tournament” will be
better this year than ever. The salary)
of the Joss Keeper has been raised,
and, as a_matter of course, the strife
for fame will be more eagerly cought
‘by the wily heathen. Among the contestants there will be men from Red
Dog, Bloody Run and Grizzly Canyon. Others will alse come from
Marysville, Chico and Red Bluff.
The crowd of spectators will likely
be large, and if the weather is fine
the “fun” will be well worth going to
see. The new Chinese band has been
_. practicing for several months, and.
this in itself will prove to be a great
inducement to take in the “big time.”
The Gun Club.
At an enthusiastic meeting of the
Nevada City Gun Club held last night
W. G. Richards was elected president,
E. W. Schmidt Treasurer and A. B.
Wolf Secretary.
It was decided to hold a shoot next
Sunday at-Glenwood, weather permitting. Manager Skewes of the Nevada County Traction Company has
kindly offered to put the grounds in
shape for the shooters.
A motion was passed whereby any
mémber who absents “himself from
three successive sheots or meetings
stands suspended from the club. =:
The dues were fixed at 25 cents per
moath, payable in advance. Initiation
fee $2.50.
Marrlageable Age.
In Germany, a “man,” in order to
marry, must be at least eighteen years
of age. In Portugal a boy of fourteen
is considered marriageable, and a
“woman” of twelve. In Greece the
“man” must have seen at least fourteen summers and the “woman”
twelve. In France the man must be
eighteen and the woman sixteen. In
Belgium the same ages. In Spain the
intended husband must have passed
his fourteenth year and the woman
her twelfth. In Austria a man anda
woman are supposed to be capable of
conducting a home of their own from
the age of fourteen. In Turkey any
youth and maiden who can walk properly and can understand the necessary
religious service are allowed to be
united for lite.

Deafness Cannot Be Cured.
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
abet condition of the mucous linof the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube gets inflamed you have a
Pamibiing sound or imperfect hearing,
and when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this
tube restored to its normal condition,
hearing will be destroyed forever ; nine
case out of ten are caused by catarrh,
which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of deafness (caused by
catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s
