One of the very jolliest whist parties ever held in this city was that of last evening at the beautiMl residence of Mr. and Mrs. C. J, Naffziger. All but two of the members of the old Dirigo Whist C lub were present, and we doubt if there were ever an equal number who could compare with them in having a good time. Street, Burned Last Night. An alarm of fire was sounded about 7:30 o'clock last night, caused’ bya blaze on West Broad street at what was formerly _. the Lones residence, bnt now owned by Mrs, John MeGibbins of Oakland. The hose carts of the fire companies arrived as promptly as possible, the run being all up hill. The hose from the Kagle’s cart: was attached to a hydrant on Spring street near Mrs, H. McCauley’s residence, and was stretched along Findley street and up Broad, where it was contieuted with the hose from the No.2 cart. When this was done about 700 feet of hose extended:from the hydrant, and the stream that was furnished when the water was turned on ould reach about twenty feet and didn’t have force enough to break a pane of glass. © Hose Company No. 1 took the hydrant in front of B. . Suell’s residence, East Broad strect, and by taking their hose through A. D. Allan’s lot reached Weat Broad street at a point within 250 or 800 feet of the burning building, By obtaining hose from the cart of Pennsylvania, No, 2, they succeeded in reaching the build, ing, but their. stream came slowly through the long line of hose, and squirted less than twenty feet fromthe nozzle, © Notwithstanding the poor water pressure the flames were prevented from spreading to the house adjoining, occupied by Morris Gallagher and family, and which was’ almost on ’-fire two or three times. After working nearly two hours the fire, which burned.slowly and stubbornly, was completely extinguished. While the fire was at its height abeut ten or twelve feet of the upper part of ‘the tall chimney fell with a heavy crash, but fortunately no one was hurt. The burned building is a total wreck and what remains of it will have to be torn down, It was insured for $1,200 in one of the companies for which Frank Power is the local agent. Rev, J Gundermah, of Dimondale, Mich., we are permitted to make this extract: ‘I have no hesitation in recommending Dr. King’s New Discovery, as the results were almost marvelous in the case of my wife. While I was pastor of the Baptist Church at Rives Junction she was brought down with Pneumonia succeeding La Grippe. ‘Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last hours with little inturruption and it’seemed as if she could not survive them. Shortly after arriving at the scene of the fire he made the startling discovery that the watch had left his pocket, The catch ‘at the end of the chain was brokén, and Mr, Hanley was at a loss to tell whether the watch had been stolen from him or had dropped out of his pocket, He notified ‘several of his friends and offered a ‘réward of $20 for its return, ae ee After the fire was over and the hose carts had been returned, it was proposed to form ‘a searching party and try to find the Assistant Ohief’s time-piece, Fifteen or more gentlemen volunteered their services. Marshal Getchell got out his fine headlight lantern and joined the party, and a few minutes later Charley Hill. showed up with a string of three lanterns—one with a green globe, another of red and ‘the third having a plain globe. Charley explained that the lanterns came out of a railroad wreck in Arizona some years ago. Lanterns and torches were obtained at the fire house and three or four persons went to their homes and procured lights, the collection of lanterns being quite varied. Proceeding to the burned. house the party began searching the premises, but owing to
the mass of charred bourds and other debris that had fallen in and about the house there was only a faint hope of finding the watch. After lopking all around and when on the point of giving up the search, the watch was picked up by Richard Sandow, one of the party. It was still in the buckskin cover in which the owner usually carries it, was running and had not been injured in the slightest manner. Mr, Hanley had fallen from a small terrace in the yard and in the descent his watch chain must have caught on some shrubbery and caused the watch to be pulled from his pocket. These voters have been permitted to register at the. usual season for registration and not immediately before the actual. balloting. Orders for the registration of votera in the various counties have been issued at long intervals according to the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors. This method has offered opportunities for numerous violation of the law which govern elections, and the Attorney-General’s opinion: will compel new régistration rolls everywhere, . © A Continuance Granted. The hearing of the case of Mrs, E. ©. Huntington vs. the City of Nevada has again been delayed. When the case was cisco yesterday morning the attorneys asked for a continuance and the same was granted.
