Child Poisoned.
Thefour-year-old son of Mr. and
Mre. Joseph Jewel of Grass Valley
died last evening at that clty after an
illnese of about eight hours, and the
symptoms of the case indicated that
death was due.to poison. The at-~
tending physician states that beyond
& doubt the child wae poisoned ‘in
some way, and it is thought that
fo playing around the rubbish dumps
the little fellow found poison in a
liquid form and drank it,
While the Jewel child lay dying,
two other little ones about the same
@ge, sons of Mr, and Mrs. J. H. Ralph,
who reside nearby, were also in a precarious condition, but evidently suffering trom a different kind of poison.
Neither child bad any heart action,
but by vigorous methods they were
brought around all right.

Through the instrumentality of Dr.
A. H. Tickell; the Crumbecker mine in
the Washington district, owned by W.
L. Williamson, has been’ bonded to
Hastern capiteliste, who have already
started operations to determine its
value, This mineis one of. the largest
low-grade: propositions in that section
and au extensive plant will—be necessary to carry on operstions, which
will mean large outlays and a revival
of industry to the Washington district.
Dr. Tickell is proving himself a champion hustler in the mining field and
the way he is attracting mining men
and capital to this section makes. of
him a men that-Nevada county ought
to, and is, proud of.
The Secret Is Oul.
The milkmaids of. Switzertand who
possess musical voices command
higher wages than the maidens not so
gifted. This is explained by the discovery that. a cow\ which is soothed by
a sweet melody .yields more milk than
one which has not been so influenced.
—Exchange.
We bavealwaysa wondered why Nevada
county possessed so many sweet singers in the suburban districts and why
the supply of the lacteal fluid was always so abundant; but now the secret
ie out and the problem ‘solved, Keep
on singing, girls, and Nevada county
will -yet break the State record for
the dairy product as well as for gold.

The time for holding the obsequies
of the laste Joseph Williams, whose
sudden death was published in these
columne yeste:day evening, has not
been definitely decided aa yet, owing
to the fact that J. A. Williams, a
brother, at Bisbee, Arizona, had to be
communicated with regarding the funeral, A telegram was received from
Bisbee foday stating that Mr. Williams started for here this morning
The funeral will probably be held next

Is Still In Prison
Lonpon, Febrasry 1,—Further investigation confirms the announcement
made by the Associated Press yesterday, on the authority of the United
States embassy here, that Mrs. Florence Maybrick has not been released.
Thougb her exact whereabouts is not
developed, it is certain that ’h> is still
a prisoner, A letter received in London Saturday from the mother of Mrs.
Maybrick, the Baroness de Rouques,
dated from her residence in France,
January 28th, said she had just returned to France after visiting her
daughter at Aylesbury Prison. ‘The
Baroness adds that she saw no possi
bility of her daughter’s release “until
the end of July, and all reports to the
contrary are absolntely false.”
The Sun tonight says: “We hear
that Mre. Maybrick has to be taken to
Wirchester Penitentiary preparatory
to leaving for America,”
