Could you have heard and #een the young alcalde*ds he told us‘the despair of his EES" Se \\ \ sagen \ aos . \ HOMELESS AND HOPELESS. people your heart would have burned. This. settlement is called Inyaha and and two mudholes. A recent lady visitor became. physically sick. when she saw the terrible poverty. “Dr. Wainwright said, ‘It is the last station on the road to hades.’ Yet Los Conejos and Manzanita and La Posta and Tuchipi are worse, for they are far from work and hopeless. “I almost forgot the children—poor little bundles of rags in too many instances. Now that the cold winds blow, how are they to keep warm? No wonder that there are rows of tiny graves. I havelived with Indians as teacher for ten years, and I do like them, respect them and believe in them. They are far better than the same class of white people. Their home life is beautiful.” The Mission Indians do not live on reservations, but in little settlements scattered over a great extent of country. Some of the great ranches, upon the borders of which a few scattered remnants of the Indian tribe are found, are only waiting for them to leave their land for.a day to absorb it into their surrounding actes, as they have already done’ to #> many Indian farms. it is the law and a most unjust one that if they do not raise a crop each sear, if they fail in this one season, they lose their land. The land given them is so worthless that there are only tiny patches here and thére which can be plowed and sowed, and with their utmost efforts they cannot: raise enough ‘to support a family. Miss Constance Goddard DuBois recently visited the Indian camps for the express purpose of studying their condition, and from her some startling facts have been learned. The Indians are dying very rapidly, she said, the reason being the lack of food and warm clothing, which lowers.their vitality and leaves them a prey to any chance disease. The old ones, endowed with constitutions founded on their natural conditions, live-now to be over 100 years. It seems as if they cannot die. ‘They are so miserably poor that death would be a welcome release. But girls and boys who are taken to schools in the east come back very often to die. Change of climate is sometimes more fatal than home conditions. It is pitiful to see the needless mortality among these people. Family affection is so deep and strong with them that each bereavement is remembered and brooded. over for years. Outsiders cannot realize the sort of and upon which these Indians are expected to make a diving and rise toward the refinements of civilization. White farmers in that region who own {from 820 to 700 acres of land complain 4+ living. s/hot say a word to bim. * . would tell me about the game laws. of Hard times and live in the tudes, . way. Yet if 20 acres were allotted to peach Indian family it would not include more than two or thrée. acres of arable tand after dividing up what . . they own in common on their best res. 4 ervations: “They bave been constantly . shoved. farther. and farther back to / spots that are not tillable, land which, a8 one agent reported, “would not sup-} port a horned toad.” . : The Indian village that was formerly } On the Santa Ysabel ranch has been destroyed, and the Inhabitants have been driven up the savage and inaccessible’ . . heights of Volean mountain, 97 human beings left face te face with starvation on land where only goats could make a . One of the last. Indians to own his little place on Santa Ysabel ranch left his home .with his family to attend a neighboring fiesta. While ;he was gone his house was burned, bis fenc @: razed and his land absorbed into the big ranch. He returned to find himself dispossessed and nothing left for him but.a refuge with the other Indians on Volcan mountain. This is an extinct voltano, with rugged, precipitous slopes, densely clothed.with the thick underbrush ‘or chaparral which.grows among the rocks and bowlders where nothing else will grow, In winter the snow lies deep upon the mountain. Near the desert and not far from the Mexican line a remnant of the Diegueno Indian tribe is to be found at La Posta and at Manzanita, face to face, like many others, with slow starvation. The distant view of La Posta is that of a heapof rocks: where a goat could hardly find a footing. A nearer view shows in the valley little patches of carefully cultivatec ground, the lower patch irrigated with care from a pool of water danimed above. ~ One of the Indian judges had the following complaint to make: “We are poor, but it is not.our fault. What can we do? In winter the snow is deep bere. Even in summer we have an occasional frost, though at other times the heat is very great. The agent came once to visit us, but what good did it do? He brought an interpreter who did not know our language, We-conld 1 wish you The white people say we cannot kill the deer. jack rabbits. We hardly dare go to Campo, for the white people are always ready to arrest us. If a cow dies, it is always an Indian that has killed i; tee It is stated In a report by Mr. Estudillo, the former agent, that the people of La Posta and Manzanita were originally placed on reservations that had absolutely no water upon them and were therefore altogether uninbabitable. The places where they have now found a little water and areable to culti vate a little land are not legally assighed to them. and they are therefore subject to eviction by the whites. ‘This means that any. chanee comer, Irish ferman or Pole, if be is'a baturalized -itizen, Obligations Discharged, Mrs. Buggins—I did something today that I’ve been screwing up my cour age to do for a long time.
