MEXICAN COURTESY.
People Along the Rio Grande Are
Very Polite in Their Intercourse.
The Mexicans observe many little
courtesies that an American rarely
thinks about, writes J. P. Cranke in
Woman's Home Companion. For instance, two gentlemen meeting on the
street gravely salute each other, by
raising their hats. As they invariably
extend this same salutation to their
American. acquaintances the latter
‘must respond in kind, and thus the habit is formed. itis often laughable to
see two Americans meet, and with
grave dignity doff their hats through
the force of habit acquired in their intercourse with Mexicans, and then observe the expression of their faces as
they realize what they have.done. The
only passport to the best societyis the
culture and character of a gentleman.
If a man is not a gentleman, were he a
millionaire, he coyjd never penetrate
that charmed inner circle that obtains
ia every border town. The Mexicans
are equally exclusives A letter of introduction from one side of the river to
the other will, however, give a‘stranger
instant recognition socially. They are
exceedingly careful about these introductions, and a man. must be well
known to somebody of importance before he can secure one. It is a rule in
Mexico that the one who introduces a

writing everybody.a letter of recommendation. does not, therefore, prevail
here. But when one does get introduced
the Mexicans never weary in showing
courtesies. To the Mexican your friend
is the same as yourself and should have
equal attention.

Richest Woman and Her

any. other living millionaire, perhaps.”
Shevrises éarly, eats a light. breakfast
in the little dining-room of the Hoboken flat, and hurries off to the ferry.
It is only a short distanee from her
home to the slip, and she always
walks, be the weather what it may.
Her husband, E. H. Green, who is seldom seen or heard of, is an old man,
almost -80, and somewhat of an invalid. The upper one of the two flats
is called his, and there, in a plainly
furnished sitting-room, he sits day in

All She Wanted.
Queen Louise of Denmark, as-all the
world now knows, had been ill for a
long time before her death. Often during the past few years, her health being eompletely broken, she had been
subject to attacks from which her reeovery was always despaired of. The:
last of these before her final taking off
océurred in Copenhagen ten months
ago. It was sudden and violent. The
queen’s physician was called and came
foré long you might fire a seven-pounder within a yard of them and they
would hardly look around. After this
they are taught to face’ fire—that is to
say, to gallop fearlessly up toa line or

their rifles, and to charge batteries of
quick-firing guns. Of course, only

sweeps over the battlefield. ‘The poor
brute only learns what the difference
really is by bitter experience.
When smokeless powder came into
general use it was found that in many
eases horses which would face the
smoke of guns using black powder
without flinching flinched and shied at
the flash and roar unaccompanied by
smoke. Continental opinion is somewhat divided as to the moral effect of
smokeless powder on men and horses,
but the general conclusion seems to
be that in daylight it is not more terrifying than black powder, although
some hold that to see men and horses
struck down by an invisible agency
lmust-necessarily be so. But it is generally agreed that the use of smokeless
powder at night has a much more disturbing effect than that ‘of the old
powder, because the flashes of the
guns, unobscured by smoke, are a great
deal more vivid.. The fear thus inspired
can, however, be overcome by training,
“(but theré is another fear which must,
in the nature of the case, be felt for the
