By Carrier,Delivered toany part uf thecity._ 12 1e2c Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City SATURDAY UIE CIO Ct Ot ee January 10, 1903 A GREAT RULE OF LIFE --> MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS IND your own business; that is to say, put your whole mind i nto your own affairs. Leave’ other people alone to live their own lives in their own way. From the earliest times the deepest philosophy has found Thought to be the substance of which all physical .-bodies-and even the universe itself, is composed. : dom religion of India, in Plato’s philosophy, and in the He-. ' In the wis‘brew bible this creative power of mind is recognized. Thought, which is the creative force in the universe, is therefore the creative force in man. Thought is force. All human forces as well as all cosmic forces are forms of thought. Every act of man is projected thoight. Every painting is first painted mentally; then physically. The architect builds the house in his mind before lumber and nails are called into use. The poet builds his fairy structure in his mind before putting the symbol of it on paper. The more clearly the business man or the inventor creates his structure mentally, the more perfect will be the result when ob~~peetified. . There is said to be never a flaw in Pier many gigantic enterprises. pont . Morgan’s There is no luck about it. He retires within himself and creates each enterprise in his own mind, eliminating all the difficulties, and making it a perfect whole, ready to launch. When launched, it floats, and bears its creator on to ° Such a man concentrates. looks-at the proposition from every point of view. waits for Black or Jones to point out flaws in it. them all himself and weeds them out. success. He creates, mentally. He He never He finds He creates first, a perfect scheme in thought—the only way anything worth _.nou.While ever was created;.then he holds that perfect picture in. nd. night, until everybody else sees it just as his mind. day a he does, Such a man’s success is certain, because he MINDS his own business, He does not work merely with his hands. He does not drift. He does not scatter his forces. He does not “talk railway stocks to Smith while his mind is wandering in Timbuctoo. ‘He puts his whole mind on the thing which he has on hand for the moment. The ideal which is constantly held in your mind is absolutely certain to. be built into reality. Every person’s business should. be to succeed, and to grow into a more perfect individual. The person who feels that the world is against him, and who scatters his forces, is not minding his own business. The only thing really against his success is his own disturbed, scattered mental forces. It ‘is his business to bring the world over to his side by first of all making a mental picture of his own success and then forever holding to the idea that he is destined to succeed. He should concentrate on success, think success, talk success. To complain of ill-treatmeut is to encourage it. To talk failure is to invite it. Fear is a magnet; so is expectancy Indeed, when you fear anything, you expect it, and that ex— pectation creates the picture in your own mind which sooner or later will be made objective. ee When we persist in minding our neighbor’s business, it means the loss of friends and the gathering of enemies. It means that we have set ourselves up as little judges of our fellows; that we are becoming narrow-souled, blundering (if not plundering) busybodies, prying into and meddling with the lives of other people, the mainsprings of whose actions we can-never know, and whose motives we can never have the right to judge. Listen to a conversation in a street car, or wherever two people hold a session to attend to other people’s business. Every other sentence begins with “He said” or “She said,” or it has to do with some unsatisfactory thing which “he did” “ or “she did.” Shallow people are forever minding other people’s business and neglecting to have any of their own. ple talk only of persons and actions, never of principles and progressive topics. The one who talks most minds his own business least; for in order to MIND your business it is nec= essary to think; and thinking requires much silence. Shallow peoee Engagement of Miss Morgan Announced Today. A delightfal aftarnoon tea was given today at the residence of Judge F.T. Nilon by. Mrs. Nilon toa few of the in_timate friends and former classmates of her. sister, Miss Rachel Morgan, whose engagement of marriage to Mr. Addison P. Moore of Tyler, Texas, was announced. Tke parlors were beautifully decorated in pink.and green, and the usual congratula:ions were exchanged, after which dainty refreshments were served and a musical programme followed. Miss Morgan is one of Nevada City’s favorite daughters and has been a most ardent worker in church and other charitable work. She is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Morgan, two of our most, respected citizens. The following were the invited guests: Misses Jean Campbell, Florence Hoyt, Frances Jones, Clara Carter, Fannie Noell of Grass Valley;.-Mesdames Frank Guenther, Herbert Dickerman, W. J. Jones, E. B. Power, F. 8. Morgan, M. M. Bernheim, Millie Morgan; Misses Bertha Webber, Frances Power, Mable Hughee, Gertrude Goyne, Betsy Morgan, Alice Nilon, Elizabeth Morgan and Winnie Mulloy. Editorial Notes. The issue of $80,000,000 two per cent. bouds for the purpose of building the Panama canal promises to afford considtrable relief to the bankers who are experiencing serious inconveuience because of the scarcity of United States bonds. ; What northern enterprise has not already accomplished for the South Dr. Obarles Warden Stiles hopes to accomplish by science, He claims to have discovered the germ of laziness which produces the “cracker” and will disseminate information in regard to its diagnosis and treatment. Big Bill Dawey pays taxes on a wil-. lien--doiHers—worth of property:—In 23 years of police service his salary only amounted to something tess than $60,000 and it must have cost him quite that much to live. Where did he get the rest? : Persona familiar with the facts, assert that the Castro administration, after bleeding the Venezuelan indus tries to the point of bankruptcy, turned its attention to the foreign’ investore and proceeded to levy blackmail, thus ' precipitating the hostilities from whicb Venezaela is now suffering. A Grand Army veteran stood listening to a juvenile Spanish war veteran recounting his experiences to an admiring group. Presently the old man remarked: “That young man telling of his experiences makes me think of the hero of the Johnstown flood relating bis experience in the presenée of Noah.” The Department of Agricultural has scored another victory, this time in Florida. Ite weather bureau gave no tice of the approach: of a disastrous frost, and the orchardists, following directions previously published by the department, prevented eerious injary by the use of smudges. To some extent sections of the Department of Agriculture are like fire departments. Their chief end is watchfulness -under ordinary circumstances but in an etiérgency similar to the outbreak of mouth and foot disease they demonstrate their real value. The appointment of Mr. Cortelyou, Secretary to the President, to the head of the néw Department of Commerce and Labor, when created, is generally conceded. Many men in the President’s posit ang be too selfish to suffer tbe loss r. Oortelyou’s services as secretary, even to secure to him a promotion that he well merits, Bonded a Mine. J. F.
