seainined THE TRANSCRIPT. macy rom etry yo NSVADA CITY, NEVADA OO., CALIFORNIA BROWN. & CALKINS.en le nn a WEDNESDAY.. eats == JAN, 12, 18°98 ommend AN INTERESTING COMPARISON. A retrospective glance over the business developments of the year just ended and a comparison of these derelopments with those of former. years under D°meecratic rnte must be ex: tremely gratifying to all good citizens, and especially to those who voted for sound money and protection in the nationsl election of 1896. A study of business conditions in the first calendar year which followed the election of 1896 shows a steady improvement. Trade was relatively better in the ‘West and Northwest, thongh later in developing than in some other sections. The flattering condition of the producer of cereals, and especially wheat, created a prosperity which seems to have been denied the Southern farmeis, owing to price depression. Manufacturing was active in nearly all classes of “products, but particularly in textiles, iron and steel, leather and farming implenfents. While the ‘results to the . manufacturer of wool were quite satisfactory, those . reaped by the cotton manufacturer were far from encours¢ing. Heavy overproduction and Southern competition are credited with being responsible for this. In iron and steel the tonnage handled was exceeded only three times before in the country’s history, and the financial results have been fairly good in spite of a rather low range of values, considering the immensedemand. =. A Vision of the Future. One day in October, 1883, Lady A., living in Rue dz Bel-Respiro, Paria, found that she had been robbed of a gam of 2,500 france. She notified the commissary of police on Rue Berryer, who instituted a search and questioned the servants, but discovered nothing. Lady A., when enumerating her serv. aunts, begged the commissary to exclude from his suspicions her second valet de chambre, a youth of 19, very good looking, very respectfol, and Yery well gnalified for his duties, who had been eicknamed ‘‘le Petit,’’ not on account of hie stature, for be was rather tall, but from a feeling of delicate, protecting familiarity which his good qualities bad won for him. Meanwhile, among the friends of Ludy A. there had been x good deal of talk shout a certain Demoiselle E., who, they said, could see the most surprising thingsin a bow! of coffee grounds. M. L. d’Ervieux had the curiosity to accompany his governess to the house of this person, and was quite surprised to hear her describe ex actly each piece of furniture in Lady A.’g ‘apartmeut, pass in review her seven servants, and say thet, though she could not name the thief, he would be guillotined witbin tro years. Eorn¢ weeks later ‘‘Je Petit’’ Jeft the servic: of hie mistress without giving any rea eon, and two years !atcrhe mounted the scaffold. This servant, so highly esteem. ed, was none other than Marchandes « the assassin. — Arena, A Few Words on Books. A good remark somebody made once $e that if you own books you do not have to read them. That is, if you hear of a certain book, you say, “I must get that out of the library and read it.’’ If you do 80, it-is necessary to read it at once and return it. If you can buy it, you read what portion satisfies your particular want at the moment, and then there it stands among your other gnod friends, always ready, like any real friend, to serve you at a moment’s notice iu any way it can. Indeed, it isa real friend, because it never deserts you; never goes back on you, never changes, unless somebudy borrows it, and that is net the book’s fault. The mere fact that your room is filled with books is a good kind of ivfiuence, for there is something in the mere proximity of books that amiakes achap serious occasionally and induces him to sit and ponder once in awhile in the midst of his grind, his sport, his daily work and his other and less valuable friends at school or college. Then, too, in these days, when there are 20 many hundreds of books a year and 60 many millions already published, “$t is utterly impossible to try to read, as the old feliows in the later middle ages used to, everythingthat is published. I¢ is fax better to re-read some good, familiar things again and again. They are good books, they are your especial favorites, and you will seldom fail tc find something new in them each time you read them. It gives you-a little idea of how much the writing of them must have’méant to their author if you can read them, say, 20 times and still go on finding something you had not succeeded in discovering in them before. —Harper’s Round Table Se To Cure’s Cold in One Day Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets.
