Tuesdays and Saturdays : How a Tree Grows. quainted with the tree’s mode of growth the first thing of importance. is. to keep in view ‘the function of the ‘‘cambian layer’’—the soft, spongy substance lying between the wood proper.and the bark. The pulpy, porous substance is,really a ‘tissue of minute cells, visible only under the microscope, and apparently all of the same.size and shape in any given variety: of: tres. 'The cells lying nearest the-bark contribute a permanent accre‘tion to the ¢ree’s covering, while those . which lie nearest the wood slowly change from ‘‘cambian layer’’ toreal tree fiber. In this way the bark becomes thicker each year, and at the same time the tree . ‘Itself ispermanently enlarged, Y. In the spring: and early summer the -bark on: alltrees is’ to a certain extent loosened to permit:of the cambian layer wholly ceases the result is manifest in the ‘‘ring’’ of new wood and the thin layer of newly formed inner bark. The ends of each limb have also grown permarks, forks, etc., on tree trunks are. no higher from the ground than they were the year before, If some one tells’ you that a limb which is now but three or four feet from the ground ‘‘ will be high enough to walk under when the tree gets'its growth,’’ put him or her down as a person knowing but little about the natural history of trees; ~~ °°" * X Bridge Paints. A careful investigation of. the reliaAmerican Society of Civil Engineers, with some important practical results. It appears that in all cases rust was found td’a greater or less extent, occurring always in spots in the center of clean metal; most of ‘this, however, being thin ‘and as bad in new structares as in old. It was, nevertheless, found that the.iron oxide paints adhered more ‘firmly to the metal than the lead paints, only one case being found in which the latter adhered well and was tough,” thongh much of this brittleness, it is suggested, may be due to adulteration of the oi] by turpentine, benzine or other petrolenm products, adulteration with lead paints than with iron, as they are more difficult to spread, and consequently dilution of the oil is resorted to. In some cases bridges coat3d with iron oxide 11 or 12 years ago were. found. to. be still in good condition without having to be repainted. Only two of -the bridges. examined had been painted. with: carbon or asphaltum paints, but the condition of things in these two cases was found’ to be not altogether satisfactory, as the coating was aot tough or adherent. Too little attention, Gerber remarks, has been paid to thoroughly cleaning the metal before the first coat of paint.is applied. 5 An Artless .Spouse. In the south of Ireland a short time igo a prominent. gentleman was elected to thé. coronership,. and . very. natarally was proud of the honor which had been zonferred upon him. When he carried the news of his election to his home, he appeared before. his wife in a yery-digaified manner and said: ‘My dear, I was elected coroner today, and there is, something I wisk to say to you. In the future I wish you to cease talking so much with the servants and assume. the dignity becoming the wife of a high publio official. Do you understand ?’’ ‘*Yes, Tom. Oh, I’m so glad that. you haye.been made a coroner! Just think! Mrs. Brown and all the Smitis will be calling to see me!’’ And her eyes fairly blazed with delight.
