Williams was ‘he news editor-and also the book’ reviewer of the same paper. . It was generally supposed that he represented Mr. Simonton’s interests, “It is necessary to state this that iny tale miay be complete. At this time /there Were two editions of the Bulletin—9, morning one for the country and an even'sing one for the city, It was the custom for ithe printers on the morning paper to report at 12. mM. to distribute the vening paper in any manner they might be calle’ upon, I was on the former, One day in the fall of the year (it was one of those melancholy days that Wm, Cullen Bryant wrote aboat), a tall, swarthy, dilapidated individual came swaggering into the coupeosing-room and inquired for me, To say that I was surprised would but faintly convey the idea, I -had never seen the nan, He introduced himself as Chester Hull, and said that Charley Conway, wlie formerly lived in Grass Valley, and who iit. that-time.was working on the Sac rame.to Record, had told him to hunt me up. I saw ata glance that he was intoxicated, Lut I thought I would give him a hance. Idid. put him to work in my place. But I had my. fears, so I lingered around the office uutil E.saw it was of no use—-he “pied” more than‘he set up. I suw that harsh measures had to be used, so Ltold him to come with me and. get ic] ‘us W .all the sufferings they stad we all the disnever set another type’ in his life. “Instead, he wrote copy for the others to. ‘‘follow.” It seems that after he left the Syracuse Journal he went to New York, and became connected with the World of that city. H's talents were recognized, and he soon becaine’ a member of the’ staff. But his convivial habits led to his downfall, and he gradually found his way to this Coast. He: was a wag of the Theodore Hooke style, but his ideas were far more ambitious and embraced the world,-as I said. Some time after Hull had gone upon the staff of the Bulletin a Monsieur Parry came here with a great flourish of trunpets. He waa to sail right up to the North Pole, and when the pole had been found he was to nail the French and Americar flags to the fore and claim the bears and the ice and all the other appurtenances i in the names of the two Nations. Hull was detailed to write up the matter. He saw at a glance the absurdity of the thing. Mr. Wm. M. Bunker, who is now managing editor and one of the proprietors of the Daily Report, was at that time city editor of the’ Bulletin. He-and Hull were chums, ‘Some time after the ‘‘expedition’ “had. gone upon its voyage of discovery Hull) said to Bunker: ‘Suppose we bring that Parry expedition back?” ‘‘How?” inquired Mr. B. ‘‘Well,” said Hull, ‘1 -have been studying this matter up, and I think between can write a better report than Parry can oF will.” “Explain,” said Bunker, .So Hull told his scheme, It was not to fool the San Francisco papers, but to take a far wider range--‘‘The whole world is: ours,” said * Hull, quoting from ,the ‘Count of Monte Christo’’—and.he was right. It was the biggest fake vf modern times. Let me tell you the plan, First, they collaborated, vey the samé news but in different language. Hull was: to write his letter to the New York World, and Bunker's was to go to the Chicago Tribune. ‘The whole plot was, concocted and carried out in the Bulletin office. All the exploitations of the, ‘expedition, ”” coveries they had made And were about to startle “the acientific weérld with, were depicted in such a graphic and apparently truthful manner bythese wags that for a few days the whole world Was lost in wonder, Hull’s letter went first, Bunker’ s followéd the next day, so that they might. appear simultaneously in the two cities. They.did over the world—and editorial after editorial was based upon the great news that had been received. were unaware of the fact that the Parry expedition had returned, But in time the truth leaked out, and, while Hull and Bunker had made him famous, the hero of the story sight, never to be heard of again. ern times. pleasure to his fellow-men, : and the scales do the rest. ‘Lheir communications must con. } appear, and their contents were sent alt. The clerk has no figuring to do; he simply sets the slides on the beams ‘For instance, if a customer wants a codfish, the clerk selects one, places it on the scales, sets one slide at the price per pound, which we will say is 12) cents. ~He then moves a slide on a beam above and when the scales balance, the figures covered by this upper slide will be the priceof the fish. If the fish weighs 10 pounds the slide will rest at 1-25, which shows it to be worth $1.25. Should a clerk have occasion to sell a customer 25 cents worth of something that retails for 44 cents.a pound, he does not stop to. think or figure how many pounds he shall weigh out, but simply sets “the upper slide at the 25-cent mark and a lower slide at the 44 mark, the tatter representing . * the price per pound. He then places enough -of the-article on the scales to balance them, and this will be thé exact amount the tsp befor children of all ages under sixteen tomer is entitled-to, viz: 5 pounds and_fiveninths, or say 5 pounds and 9 ounces. You don’t stop to find the weight of any~ thing. If it is desired to weigh the article the svales can be used for this purpose. the same as any ordinary scales, The arrangement of the beams is such that the weight of ahything will balance the scales independent of the computing system, wher the) slide reaches the proper place, The scales are a great conveniences and there is no danger of mistakes. 0 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.
