SELF-RELIANCE.
—
NE of the first lesssons a mother should teach her
‘ child is that of self-helpfulness—to accept no service
~ of another which it can perform for itself; to ask no
favor, or expect others to sacrifice their own ease to satisfy
its individual wants. Teach it always to use its own resources from which to supply deficiencies and bridge over
emergencies.
Self-reliant people are rarely selfish people; rarely ready
to accuse others of being selfish, but are generally possessed
of ability with which to assist less fortumate associates. Being conscious of their own strength, they need no prop; they
know the limits of their own power and the amount of reserve
force they may count upon, and can thus calculate to some
purpose, not only in directing their own energies, bnt in infusing strength in others.
The self-reliant person, knowing his own strength,
learns to know his own worth, and, acting upon this knowledge, rarely fails to succeed in whatever line he undertakes.
The child should be taught from its earliest years, not
only to wait upon itself, but to be watchful for little services
that may be rendered to another—not for reward, but because
it is right, and because this watchfulness will create a habit
of observation and thought that will be of yreat service to
him in the years to come,. making him a blessing to his companions as well as a comfort to himself. A selfish person is
the most wretched thing on earth—and the most unloved.

They are going to show models of

Fearful Hardship
Sauinas, Cal., January 19th.—Two
cases of terrible privation and suffering on account of accidents which befell woodchoppers comes from. Watsonville this morning. John Donovan, a native of Ireland, aged 61,
while chopping down trees last Friday
at the Zayante ranch, felled a large
one, which in its deecent struck him,
pinning him fast tothe ground. His
absence from home did not cause anxiety, as it was known he would go to
Felton for a day ortwo. But yesterday morning a companion who worked
near Donovan took a notion to look
around for bim, when he diecovered
the missing mau as described. He
had lain witbout food or water, exa forest of a million young trees, The company takes a
purely utilitarian view of the forestry work. It is not seeking to improve the esthetic appearance of the country, but
merely to provide itself with a supply of cross ties to be used
ip its construction work.
The practical side of forestry is the side which will appeal to the American people most strongly. Whenever it
can be provedsthat the preservation and cultivation of forest
trees are more profitable than their destruction the intervention of the government to protect the forests will be unnecessary. The lumbermen have been actuated up to this time
wholly by a desire for present profits. As long as the supply of timber seemed unlimited, economy was unnecessaty
and the future could be left to take care of itself. But
within the past few years it has become painfully apparent
that the supply of timber is not limitless.
merly heavily wooded have been almost entirely deforested
and the lumbermen have been forced farther and farther
away from the centers of population.
As the supply of available timber trees has decreased
the necessity of an intelligent forestry system has become
evident. At the present rate it will not be long before all
the natural] timber trees of the United States will be gone
amt anless successors be planted and cared for the lumber
business will be a thing of the past. The railroad companies are large and constant users of timber and are forced to
look into the future. That they take the proper view of the

Harrowing as the case above is, it is
a trifle when compared to that of Fritz
Kessell, a German woodchopper, 42

cottage at Skyland. He was ill in his
cabin and last Wednesday night upset a coal oil lamp. The burning fluid
poured over his right arm and upon
his chest and thence down his body

indescribable for four days, during
which time he lay alone, without pursing or nourishment, until discovered
by neighbors and brought down to
the hospital. Kessell’s case is not considered hopeless.
