The book of the leading English sire St. Simon is full for three years to come at 400 guineas the season, about $2,000. St. Blaise and Iroquois both stood for a time. in this country at $2,500. Under the heading, ‘‘Pictorial Lies,’’ the Shangtung correspondent of the North China Daily News says: ‘‘Not long since I found in a Chinese inn a a ee The superscriptions narrated in yery bad Chinese how that ‘the petty king of Japan had rebelled against. the constituted authority of the Dragon throne, and in the pride of his heart had constructed a navy and troops to harass his imperial majesty withal. "But at Ping Yang the rebellious king, even after hiring the Koreans to fight for him, was completely routed withont the joss of a single Chinese banner. The terrible havoc at Ping Yang is depicted with: much. display of gore among the Japanese ranks. Next troops in Manchuria. -Genera] Sung is represented as issuing forth from a city gate and chasing the panic stricken ensmy pell mell oyer'a stone bridge. Then -somes the storming of a fortress on the sea coast. A dozen impossible warships ate belching forth fire and shell. -The flags at the mastheads are inscribed with the common Chinese names of Japan, England, France, Germany and the United States. Notwithstanding this aneqtal contest. of all the world against. China, the soldiery of the fortress are watching the onset with the: utmost somplacency, not even deigning to return the fire.’’—London News. : Power of the Human Jaws Dr. G. V. Black, a dentist of Jacksonville, Fla., has: made some interesting experiments upon the force exerted: by the human jaws in the ordinary mastication of food; and. also the . greatest foree which the jaws are eapable of exerting. By. means of a’ spring instrament provided with aregistering device he took reeords of about 150 ‘‘bites’’ of different persons, Of-these.50 have been preserved as characteristic of the ordinary man, woman and ehild. ‘The smallest. pressure recerded was.80 pounds, by.a little girl 7 years old, This was with the incisors. Using her molars, the same child exerted a force of 65 pounds. The highest record was made by a physician of 85, The instrument aged only registered 270 pounds, and he closéd it together without apparent effort. There was no method of determinhave gone. This test was made with the molars. Several persons exceeded a force of 100 pounds with the incisors and 200 with the molars. The physical condition of the persons experimented upon séemed to have little bearing upon the result. Dr. Black is of the opinion that the condition of the peridentgl-membranes is the controlling facter, rather than musonlar strength. Dr. Black found that in the habitual ehewing of food much more force is exerted than is necessary. School’ Methods Abroad.
