The Wily Duckworth.
Sacramento, Jan, 21.—There was a
feeling.of suppressed excitement. ini the
air this morning when the’ Assembly
opened. Members. of the Assembly
gathered together in small crowds in
the-corner of the Assembly Chamber
or in tiooks in'the lobbies, and discussed the most serious situation that has
confronted the Republican party in
many a: long day. It was generally
known that the attempt to. oust Chief
Clerk Duckworth had signally failed.
Duckworth had shown himself to be
a shrewder man and a brighter politician than he had been given credit for.
-He had stated that if the matter was
forced too strongly he would whip the
leaders.of the Assembly into line and
make many who ate against him take
water.
No sooner was ee informed that he
must resign than he decided upon a
unique plan. He induced the Democratic and Populist minority to hold
a caucus last night and hear his appeal.
In his address to the caucus he said
that in the matter “in question others
were more guilty than he, and that he
considered it would be a great injustice to let him out without a hearing.
Two of the Democratic attaches who
received appointments were recommended by members of the Republican caucus, He said the opposition
against him was designed-to cause his
ruin, in order’to save others.
With the Democrats and ‘Populists
iriends agreeing to stand by him, Duckworth hada majority in ‘the Assembly,
and when the Republican caucus
learned of the combination, they saw
it would be useless to press the issue
any further. The matter will probably be buried in the committee.
As a result of this turn in the tide,
Duckworth is today. regarded as the
biggest man in Sacramento, the members of the Republican caucus freely
admitting that he was too much for
them.
