Eprror Transcrier: Sir—While the Railroads are blockaded and telegraphic communication interrupted, you may find space for a review of two articles which appeared in a recent issue of a San Francisco daily. In one Susan B. Anthony told of the changes she had seen since she. left her teacher’s-deck,-filty-years-ago, to.engage--in the struggle for equal rights. The young people of today do not know that in the early past of 1800, a husband had full’ control of his wife’s money and could dispose of it as he pleased, leaving her and her children destitute, That he could collect her wages if she worked, and also the father had full control of the children, and could by will take them away from. their mother. Now, in évery State, the laws relating to property are as just towards women as)men, and in some instances, women have. been given more power than the husband, Full suffrage prevails in two States; but in 10,000 communities, women have a right to vote for certain municipal laws. They have occupied the elective officers of Mayor, State Attorney and Superintendent of State Instruction. Women have formed.Political study clubs, Municipal Leagues, Social purity organizations, etc., and thus are preparing for a duty that will surely come to them. If citizens of foreign birth were obliged to learn as much before voting, one would not be given the ballot who said Caminetti was President of the United States, as was done in this town last fall. This intelligent (?) foreigner cast his first vote fer Governor,’ no doubt believing it was for President. The other article hiehI referred, well named Prattle, wal ty Ambrose Bierce. He attacks alike meh’nd women, regardless of age, position and worth, He is as ready to criticize President Jordan, as if he hadbeen preparing and sending out College Presidents alf his life. Ambrose dips his pen in vitriol and gall and spreads his ideas before the public. Once I felt indignant, that when he could find no other epithet bad enough, "he would call his opponent an old ‘woman or address him by a feminine term. Now it is sorrow I feel for him, As I think what a mother that man must have had, that she never left a shréd of memory that would cause him to respect a woman, When a » boy or a man has only the memory of a vile wemen, imetowd of the prand loving mather. who was his confident and advisor, sure of her sympathy and encouragement in every plan if it were right, of hersound advice and kind remenstrance if wrong, it is not strange that he develops into just. such a. character as Ambrose Bierce. He is like acrnel boy who sticks pins into insects and laughs to see them squirm. Ambrose impales men and women on the sharp point of his pen, and then, up there in the seclusion of the Napa Hills, he laughs to think how ‘his victims squirm. If he has not the power to cause them such intense. suffering, he has the si:gular enjoyment of imagining it and thus we leave him, like Bryan in The Lady of the Lake, of whose birth strange tales were told, Oue of the most intelligent women in this city, one who keeps abreast of the times in A Concise Chronicle of Various Folks Newcastle, PERSONAL. POINTERS. Doings and Intentions. F. Joubert of San Francisco is in town. S. P. Thornton of Spenceville is in town, A. H. Chester of Milwaukee arrived here ast night. f A. L. Begbie réturned this morning from Mrs. and’Mrs. A. M. Alten returned yesterday from a visit to San Jose and San Francisco. Died at Grass Valley. Mrs. A. Wiles died at Grass Valley last night of heart failure. Deceased was a daughter of Mrs, Scadden of this city, and aged thirty-two years. .She leaves a husband and eight children. on OI ne Broken the Record. : The worid’s production of gold in 1894 has broken the record. The total is placed by the United States Mint Bureau at $175,000,000, ‘a gain of nearly $20,000,000 over the~figures--6f-1893,; which.surpassed_the yield of any previous year, The gain is chiefly in the United States, South Africa, Australia and Russia. The gold mined in this couutry in 1894 is not far from $45,000,000, including an increase of $4,750,000 in Co'orado, $2,000,000 in California, $1,000,7 000 Large gains are reported in Washington and Oregon. The gold yield in South Africa has made a bound from $26,000,000 in 1893 to $38,000,000 in 1594. Australia will yield about $39,000,000, an increase of $3,000,000, and Russia $28,000,000, against $26,000,000 in 1893. China will probably show a falling off as a result of* its disturbed condition, For the coming year a gold yield of $200,000,000 is }indicated, but ‘no one as yet has raised the cry of overproduction, r eee Electric Bitters. Handsome Presents Given Away all that is of current interest told’ me, not long since, that her husband ‘believed in equal suffrage before she did, and it was through his influence that she inveetigat :d the subject (for she is not a woman that takes.her ideas second hand) and become convinced that woman suffrage was not only right, but that it. was-needed, to this she added. ‘‘I have been a. better wife, less exacting and more careful of my husbands rights.” There is a grain of comfort for gentlemen who fear their wives would be :uined if they stamped an Australian ballot. M. F. L. 9-896 Feet Death of Wm. A. Meek. The residents of Camptonville mourn the loss of an old and respected citizen, who after many years’ residence in their midst has passed away, leaving a record as honorable as any of those who passed before into the unknown. W, A. Meek, who died in San Francisco last Saturday, was that citizen and he-leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances to regret his death. He was 63 years of age, a native of Canada and leaves a wife and other relatives. ‘The remains arrived here yesterday from San Francisco and was immediately conveyed to Camptonville for interment.ARRIVALS AT THE™ _ Union Hotel, Main Street.
