On the Wrong Tack. ; “4A young man in New York was deep. ly impressed with the beauties of Freé masonry and after considerable effort, self for the ceremony of initiatidn into the order. Two hours later, when it seemed to him-that there was nothing-more-to come in the way of initiation, he asked if he might take the tack out of his foot. His sufferings were not ameliorated when he was told that the tack had nothing to do with the ceremonies.—New York Post. He Was Not Laconic. .fJohn Morley in his life of Gladstone tells the story of the statesman’s examination for admission to Oxford untversity when he was a youth. The examiner, having utterly failed to floor the candidate on some point of theology, said, “We. will now leave that part of the subject.” “No, sir,” replied the candidate; “if you please, we will not leave it yet,” and proceeded to pour forth a fresh stream. The dean in Mr. Gladstone’s day was Gaisford, famous aniong other things for his trenchant brevity. “This laconic gift,” observes Mr. Morley slyly, “the dean evidently had not time.to transmit to all of his flock.” Mere Money Getting: Money getting is no new passion From the beginning nincteen-twentieths of our American population have had no other mastering purpose then to make money. They have been brendwinners, fortune getters, by the lines of least resistance, without dreams of suceess in the professions or in the arts or in patriotic politics. But there have also been up to re cent years a remnant, a select few, a company of enlightened and gifted people, who have put ideals abead of money getting. There was Agassiz, who refused to lecture at $500 a night because he wa: too busy to make money. Charles Sun ner declined to lecture at any price be cause, he said, as senator all his tim belonged to Massachusetts. Spurgec: refused to come to America to detive fifty lectures at $1,000 a night, sayin: he could do better; he could stay i London and ‘try to save fifty souls Emerson steadfastly. declined to in crease his income beyond $1,200 be cause be wanted his time to think.oo icnn ee ds es WANTED $250. An Englishman relates the following election experience: “I was taking part in canvassing a constituency without a representative. I was announced as a speaker at a mass meeting held in. a large field within shadow distance of a famous cathedral. One of the other orators délivered the most impressive speech I have ever heard, He spoke of the struggle of the paor, ho® they had to bear their burden. He made me almost cry by his eloquence. He talked about his own little home, which he only just managed to keep together by ‘the sweat of his brow.’ ‘Who is he? I asked. ‘Well,’ replied my friend, the candidate, ‘he is known. in his own town as “Popshop Dick” because he is a prosperous pawD broker.’ ”’ Byron’s Fatted Goose. One of the stories concerning the traditional dish of roast goose on MIchaelmas day refers to Lord Byron, says an English newspaper. The poet always insisted in keeping up old customs in small things, such as having hot cross buns.on Good Friday and roast goose on Michaelmas day. This last fancy had a grotesque result when he was in Italy. After huying a goose and fearing it might be too lean Byron fed it every day for a month previous to the festival, so that the poet and the bird became 80 mutallyattached that when Sept. 29 arriv he could not kill it, but bought another and had the pet goose swung in a cage under his carriage when he traveled. a Wonderful Nerve Is displayed: by ‘many a man enduring pains of agcidental Cuts, Wounds, Bruises, Burns, Scalds, Sere feet or stiff joints.
