They will Assume Charge of their Re‘spective Offices on Monday Next. January 3, 1903 & assume official charge of the positions of public trust which have been assigned them by the will of the majority of our voters. For over a _._month.past many of them have been industrious}y at work in conjunction ‘with their predecessors and have thorougbly posted themselves upon the incumbent duties which fall upon them: All the necesstry bonds have been filed aad they will now soon wear the toga of office. The following is a list of the men who will couduct the'affairs of Nevada County for tte -next four years, accompanied by a brief sketch of each : : . Hon. Frank T. Nilon, who was reelected (o the office of Superior Jadge of Nevada County, isa native of this city and a graduate from our schools. After finishing his education at Hastings Law College and graduating with high honors, he returned to this city and practiced his chosen profession of law. He was elected District Attorney of Nevada County for two terms and ‘filled the duties of that office with marked ability and with great credit ‘ to himself and his constituents, AfterF. T. NIvon ~——-ward he was elected Super‘or Jduige and during his past term has filled the position with wisdom, dignity and impartiality. He bas proved to be a most capable and efficient Judge. Henry R. Walker who was chosen by the voters of Nevada County to serve as their Sheriff, ie a “popular man, as was shown,by the heavy vote he received {n the places where he was best known. He was born and raised in Grass Valléy township and is a selfmade man. He is fally qualified to fill this important office, being young and active, and cooland calm in his judg ment. _Mr. Walker has -appolnted — Thos, H, Watersef thie city, who has filled the position of Deputy Sheriff — —— “ with great efficiency under Sheriff H.R. Waker Getchell, to officiate as hig deputy, and his selection gives unanimous satisfaction to our people. They will both make excellent officials. SSS T° newly-elected county officers and their deputies will on Monday nex F. L. Arbogast, our genial and accommodating County Clerk who was re-elected to serve in the same capacity forthe next four years has proved _ bimeelf a popular and painstaking official. Mr. Arbogast is possessed of muéh ability in this line and through his splendid supervision the great volume of-business in the Clerk’s office has been brought down to a perfect _and correct system, Al.J. Hosking of Grass Valley, who has proven such an sis adept and able assistant to Mr. ArboF, L. ARBOGAST gast, will continue to act in the capacity of Deputy County Clerk. Fred and his assistant will attend to the duties of the office in the future, as they have in the past, and no better indorsemcnt could be given them than their past record. _._H.J. Wright, who was elected Treasurer of Nevada County, is very popular, and well competent to fill the duties of the office to which he was chosen, being an able and skillful accountant and thoroughly qualified ina every detail. Fora number of years Mr, Wright. was Deputy Treasurer of this county under B.F. Snell and became thoroughly familiar with the ~-daties connected of that office. He is ; obliging and courteous and will prove H. J. Wricst 7 to be.one of the most capable and expert officials who has ever had charge of a county office. As an able assistant, Mr. Wright has chosen Geo. Bennetts of Grass Valley as Deputy Treasurer—-an exceedingly bright and competent young gentleman who is much esteemed by all who have ever formed his acquaintance. : ; ‘qs w > Henry O. Schroeder, who bas go ably Us attended to the county’s affairs in the Assessors’ office for the past four years will continue to act in that capacity, having been declared at the last election to be the choice of the voters. During his past term be hes been exceedingly attentive to his dutes and at all times bas been Sa found courteous and obliging and bas raised the county’s tax roll considerably, with fairness to all. He will have for his deputies John M. a nays Hammill and Edward Charles MorH, ©, SouRorper gan -of Grass Valley and E. W. Schmidt of Nevada City. All of the gentlemen will be benefited by the experience and traiuing they have already received while assisting the Assessor. That no man in Nevada County bas more friends or enjoys a greater popularity than Sidney J. Peard, the Recorder-elect, is evidenced by the magnificent support he received from the voters at the recent general election. “Sid” is also eminently qualified to fill the position to which he has been elected and will make a very capable and painstaking official. O'NEILL O'Neill is a wide awake, progressive educator and under his control our schools will still maintain their excellent standing. Geo. L. Jones of Grass Valley, who will succeed E. B. Power as District Attorney of Nevadacounty, isunexceedingly bright and able young man : who is not only well read and versed ‘in law, but aleo possesses the special adaptability and qaslifications for making an ideal excecutive to look after the People’s interest in all criminal cases. He is one of the members ~ ef the well known law ‘firm of Jones & Larue of Grass Valley and is a prominent and active worker in the Native Sons fraternity. He is a man of exemplary character & Jones has selected H. L. F. W. TayYLor the place could not have been secured, honesty. 1. G. O'Neill, who has been eelected by the voters of Nevada county to superintend the coanty schools for the uext four years; is one of the wblest . educators in this section of the State, having been connected: with our pablic. school system eirce 1869. For a number of-year past Mr. O'Neill has filled the pesition of Principal of the Nevada City schools ina manner that has given universal satisfaction and has won for him much praise from the people of this community. Mr. SGro. L. Jones nd is also an eloquent and talented speaker. Mr. Moody of I'ruckee as his assistant to look after the District Attorney’s duties in the eastern end of the coun}y, and @ more comIt is an excelFrank W.,Taylor of Nevada City will be the -men--in-whose hands will fall the estates of people of this county who die and leave norelatives and it ig entirely unnecessary to state that all such estates will be safe in his care. Mr. Taylor has lived in this county fora number of years and is one of our best known and most respected _young business men. His popularity was shown at the late election, when be was chosen Public Administrator by a large majority. Hoyt’s illustration of the possible adventures of “A Stranger in New York” will be the attraction at the Theatre flext Thursday evening. The management modestly describes the production as an attempt to supply an evening’s entertainment, by the author of “A Contented Woman,” “A Trip to Chinatown,” “A Biaek Sheep” and other well known plays. Mr. Hoyt has chosen for his backgrounds, a reception room of the Hoffman House, and a room ia the Madison Square Garden during the course of the celebrated French ball, In front The stock of groceries in the Mulloy store and personal preperty of the late CO. E. Malloy were disposed of today. The bidding was started at 12 o’clock and the bids in this city were run up $650, wheu an ‘offer was received from San Francisco. The sale was then postponed until 1 o’clock to find out if the bid was-good. At 1 o’clogk a bid was put im for J. Golober of San Frapcisco of $1148 for the stock as it was when the inventory was taken, Some of. the “stock has been disposed of ‘since, so that the offer amounted to something over $900. Several small articles were sold at fair prices. -City Marshal Deeble of Grass Valley bought one of the delivery wagons for $75, aud W. King. seught onefor $65. P. F. Simonds purchased a gray horse for $15.
