Ward who eloped from Los Angeles
with Mrs. John Bradbury despite the

of adultery. Judge Tiowe fixed the
bail at $2,000 which Ward furnished.
Drowned in a Washtob,
Stockton, July 10.—Lewis Spreckman, a blacksmith subject to fits,
went to a wash-tub to wash his face
last night, was seized with a fit and
pitched head first into the tub where
he drowned. His dead body was found

Two Men Drowned,
Jamustown, Cal, June 10.—Jesse
Vann and Edward Anderson. were
drowned this morning in Leland Pond
at Westport, Mendocino county. It is
supposed that one of them was seized
with cramps and the other went to his
rescue. Their cries of distress. were
heard by péople. in the vicinity.
Quay Will Run Again,
Harrispure, Pa., July 10.—Senator
Quay today announced he would be a
candidate for re-election, thus putting
to rest all rumors that lie iutended quitting politics.
A Nove League,
Lonpon, July 10.—The announcement
is made that. the membership of the
national Legitimation League, an organization which was brought into existence but a few months since, has
rapidly increased throughout the country, and has reached a total of over
half a million; that thousands of names
of new members are being added daily,
and that the publication of a weekly
paper in furtherance of the parposes of
the league is to be at once commenced.
The main aim of the organization, as
expressed in its constitution, is to secure legislation legitimizing all children heretofore born out of wedlock
and now living, and all children that
may hereafter: be born under similar
conditions.

Cmicaao, July 10.—Joseph. Hildebrand, elevator man in the Chicago
Packing and Provision Co. building,
was killed today by a two-hundred
pound chunk of ice falling. down the
shaft from the fourth floor and striking him on the head. The ice’ had by
melting worked its own way into the
shaft from where the ice man left it.

A Negro Lynched.

was taken out by a-mob today and
hung.
Unlawfal to Wear Feathers.
Boston, July 10.—The discovery has
just been made that the last Legislature, shortly before adjournment,
passed a bill making it criminal to sel]
or. wear the feathers of birds. No attempt was made to enforce the new
law, aud it was forgotten by the time
the Legislature ceased to exist. But
within the last day or-two it has been
brought prominently before public notice, and it is said the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is
preparing to enforce it. Women who
have been accustomed to wearing
feathers in their hats or for other ornamental purposes are considerably excited over the new law, which they resent more strongly than the agitation
against theater hats, and they talk
boldly of defying it.
Lawyer Kills Himself
Hype Park, Mass., July 10.—Edmund
Davis, a well-known Boston. lawyer,
commited suicide yesterday. He had
been arrested for ebmezzlement.
Killed All But the Babe,
‘ Larrmore, N. D., July 10.—During
the severe storm Thursday: night the
residence of S. E. North, four miles
east of here, was struck by lightning,
and North, his wife and 3-year-old child
were killed. The only*member of the
family that escaped was a 15-month-old

the Big Giant quartz mine 14gmiles
west of Clipper Gap. The mine is
owned by Levi Tyler and Ezra Kingsley,
of Auburn. David Jones has bonded
the Kingsley interests and in conjunction with the remaining partner, is
prospecting the ledge. A shaft was
sunk 25 feet. A crosscut was made
showing a ledge 14 feet wide. Drifting on the ledge will” soon be commenced. A great .many thousand
dollars have been. taken from~ pay
chutes on the ledge in former years.—
