Jerusalem, dirty, crowded, filthy, poisonous, with multiplied and commingled stenches, with now and then one stalwart and pestilental smell asserting itself above its ellows, a very Triton in a school of Leviathan orders —streets carpeted with offal, beast human and “various,” a city unfit for the habitation of white men, a Turkish city, in short—that is a brief, comprehensive and trathful description of it, that’® the City of Jerusalem as it reveals itself to the senses today. Oh,once in a space they tell me, you come into a clean place and want to He down and_ revel and wallow in it. Thut’s what they tell me. Ididn’t see any. I didn’t want to I’m sorry now that I.went. But the family'persuaded me, ee “What!” they said; “Come 15,000 miles to Jerusalem and then not to enter the Holy City? What utter nonseuse.” * SoI went in much against: my will, and hadn’t been in the church of the Holy Sepulcher half an hour before some pilgrim picked my pocket and lifted a watch worth $500—if it bad been the only one in the world. There being seme competition, however, my loss was not so great as to make me offer a reward of $8 for it. What made me disgusted with the thief was not so much the fact of his moral obliquity—you expect that under . Turkish misrule anywhere; you would be greviously disappointed -if you didn’t see it; the shock might prove fatal. It was the utter tactlessness of the beggar that grieved me. Because the very next day we planned to go to Jeticho. That was aroad to be robbed on. Why couldn’t we have waited ong day? Whata story’ we might have had. No; he must go and pick my pocket right in church—with as little compunction as though it had been a church fair. And what he wanted with a watch was another mystery. I never missed it, afterI found it was. gone. That is, after I didn’t find it. Time is. of no value over here. Nobody keeps any note of it. The Mohammedan day begins reasonably enough, at sunrise rather than at midnight. You glance ata clock tower; the position of the hands. pointing to the frenzied vagaries which stand for the Arabic numerals— for oddly enough, although we use the Arabic figures, the Arabs do not use anything that even so remotely resembles them—tell you: that it is 7 o'clock by that timepiece, which is correc’, although you know very well that itis half-past twelve—noon. But that 8 hot. surprise you at all. ’ Nuthing at ig contradictory, or patadoxical surprises youin thiscountry. You'are merely astonished when you run up agsinst something natural and rational —Robert J. Burdette. + ORe + The General Committee in charge of. the late Carnival held a meeting last night.. The work was examined by the Board of Supervisors, the City Trustees and the Union Halk Association and accepted right away. The work has been done ina very satisfactory manner, and it isa good and substantial improvement. It enhances the valae of the surrounding realty and’ makes that portion of the city more desirable in every way. This change for the better is largely due tothe untiring efforts of Supervisor W. G@. Martin. He has given much of his time to overseeing the work from start to finish, and is deserving of great credit for the pains he has taken in the matter. Mr. Martin is proving himself to bean excellent public official, being always alive to the welfare of the connty’s interests. By the way, all pirties having claims against this sewer are requested to leave the same at the National Hotel. Will Press a Rutton. From all directions trains are coming toward San Francisco this thousands’ upon thousands: of visitors, attracted ‘by the great convention.
