In July, 1893, Mr. Willoughby left for the Fast, where he attended the World’s Fair at Chicago, visited relatives in the Bastern States, and then went to England, which’ was the home of his early childhood. While there he met an acquaintance from Montana, who pursuaded himto continue his journeyings to South Africa. They left im company and proceeded almost directly to Johannesburg. There Mr. Willoughby worked for over a year under Capt. Mein, formerly of Nevada eointy, at the Robinson mine. He became well acquainted “with the sur‘many members of tae American Golony. . Another daring robbery on the public highway was committed about 2 o'clock. yesterday afternoon on the Blue Tent road, this side of the Mount Vernon House and about six miles from town. The victim this time was William Engle, a teamster who drives for Con. Grissel of this city. Engle was returning from. Graniteville, where he had hauled a load of freight. His team of eight horses.was moving slowly along, when the driver’s attention was attracted -by the barking of his dog, and glancing ahead he saw a man standing by the side of the road. Hs supposed the fellow was traveling and had stopped in the shade for a short rest. As Engle drove up he saluted the stranger with “Good day,” and by return of compliment the man on the ground drew a big pistol and covering ‘Engle ordered him to stop his team. Afler .working for the time named at the Robin. son mine Mr. Willoughby secured a! better position at the Bufflesdorn mines! something over 100 miles west of Johannesburg: Here E. R. Abadie was management of Geo. Starr. At the Bufflesdorn station the following Grass Valleyans were engaged: Mr. Abadie Superintendent, Richard Angove foreman, J. Angove, S. Maynard, J. Cocking, J. Richards, Henry Berryman, Jas. Juliffe and Mr. Willoughby. Mr. Abadie has recently resigned and James Juliffe, as our readers remember, was killed by accidentally falling down the shaft about three months.ago. Mr. Willoughby left for home on the 16th of April. Arriving at Cape: Town he did-not-avail himself of the opportunity . to take a stateroom on a steamer which left next day, but inclined to remain at “the cape” fora fewdays. It was three weeks after that before be was able to secure a stateroom and he saw more of Capetown than he desired to. He was then obliged to take passage on an “Immediate” steamer, which does: not sail direct to England, but stops at African ports. Such a ship was the Drummond Castle recently wrecked off thé coast. of France. The vessel which Mr. Willoughby was aboard stopped at two or three points on the west coast of Africa, and at the Canary Islands. Tons and tons of bananas and pineapples weretaken aboard for the London market. Mr. Willoughby is glad to get home so that he can be with his relatives. He is stopping with his sister, Mrs. Tonkin on Colfax Avenue. He speaks well of South Africa, believing it to be a region of uncalculable mineral resources..Gold is not the only mineral found, but copper, silver, lead, etc., exist. There is also a providential: supply of coal. But for this the gold mines could not be worked with profit, as fuel would be tooexpensive. Where a reef of gold is found near by there is a ledge of coal. The latter is the source of all engineering and electrical. energy. Mr. Willoughby confirms in a general way the reports of the wealth of California ‘superintendents and ~ engineers who have gone to South Africa. This wealth they have accumulated by judicious investments in African mining stocks which are handled in the London market. The Americans are “on the inside” in the stock deals, knowing with tol certainty when a given. stock is te” be boomed. By such investments John Hayes Hammond, Capt. Mein and others have become wealthy. Thelatter, he says,’must be -worth a half a million dollars at least, the former much more. Mr. Willoughby bas much of interest to‘tell and he will be the most industriously interviewed man in Grass Valley for the next few
