All persons having flowers to spare
and who are willing to contribute to, ward decorating the hose carriage of
‘Pennsylvania Engine Company, No. 2,
are requested to send them-to the firehouse Friday morning.
We understand that several business
firms are preparing to, havefloats in
the procession on the 4th, but that they
are keeping it very quiet.
The Goddess of Liberty and all children-that--are-ta-ride.on the car of. lib-.
erty will meet at the New York Hotel
at 9:30 o'clock on the morning of. the
Fourth. ¥
Captain Pecor informs us that Mountain Division, Uniform Rank Knights
of Pythias, will tura out about 25 men
in the 4th of July parade.
The Native Sons will serve a nice
lunch to their. guests at Odd Fellows
banquet hall after.the parade. Frank
T. Nilon will deliver an address of wel:
come to the visiting Native Sons. All
members of Hydraulic Parlor who have
not yet ordered their uniforms should
do so at once, either at E. E. Dulae’s
tailor shop or of M. M. Baruh.
The. Curly Bears can obtain their
uniforms by calling on M. M. Baruh or
any other member of the committee.
Already many of the business places
have been -nicely decorated, and by
tomorrow afternoon, With possibly. one
or two exceptions, the town will be
decked out in full holiday attire.
James Power has a stuffed -bear that
will form the central figure in the decorations in front of his place. :
Several residences on Main street
are to be decorated in fine style, arid it
is hinted that the displays to be made
there will excel aniything of the kind
ever seen here before. .
The fireworks exhibition on the night
of the 4th will take place on the suspension bridge, beginning as soon as
darkness comes on. All the set pieces
will be faced towards Sacramento
street, which will be the best place tor
spectators.
“A large crowd will doubtless attend
the firemen’s ‘ball at Armory Hall on
the evening of July 4th. It is expected
that Col. Forbes of Marysville and
Miss Minnie Keynolds of this.city, who
is to be the Goddess—of “Liberty, will
lead the grand march. Col. Forbes is
to be chief aid in the procession. The
cominittee: have already~-sold quite a
number of tickets. Med
Barrels of ice water will be placed
about the streets in various places on
the Fourth, so that everybody may
have a cold drink whenever they feel
thirsty.
The shield at the corner of Broad and
Pine streets and the star at the corner
of Pine and Commercial, composed of
colored electric lights; will look very
pretty when they are lighted up tomor:
row night. The Electric Power Company will have a handsomesign in
front of their office. With the numerous incandescent lamps and a dozen
or more arc lights, and the Japanese
lanterns and other lights, the town
will certainly present a very beautiful
and charming appearance.

Flagpoles. .
The new flagpole for Hose Company
No. 1 was raised this forenoon and is a
\ nice-looking mast. This afternoon as
Phil Byrne and his crew of men were
engaged in raising the iron: flagstaff
at the No. 2 fire house the mast broke
in two, the upper part* faJling to the
ground. A wooden pole will be driven
into the iron mast and the two sections
drawn together and secured. Another
attempt will be made to raise the pole
tomorrow.

A Thrilling Episode Today in San
Francisco’s Notorious Breach
of Promise Lawsuit.
{Special to the DaAILy THANSCRIPT:}
__ SAN Francisco, July 2.—-Lucky Baldwin came near losing his life today during the progress of Lillian Ashley's
$75,000 breach of promise suit against
him. Miss Ashley was on the witness
stand, and was being examined on the
point as to whether she had ever worn
crimps or not. She denied that she
had, when the defense produced a photograph where her hair was crimped,
and asked her if it was her likeness.
“It may be, but I don’t think-so.”
At that instant Emma A. Ashley, sis. :
ter to. the complainant, stepped behind
defendant’s chair and taking a revolver
from a small bag she carried it placed
the muzzle within two inches of Baldwin’s head and attempted ‘to pull the
trigger. Finding she did not have sufficient strength inone hand she took
hold of it with both and fired. The
bullet missed its mark, and she attempted to fire again.
Just as. she was about to pull the
trigger H. A. Unruh, Baldwin’s busihess manager. sprang forward and
struck her wrist a violent blow, following this up by wresting the revolver
from her grasp. Lillian Ashley turned
pale and was apparently about to faint.
James Orittenden of counsel for the
prosecution sprung forward'to the defenee of Emma Ashley-with his hand in
his pistol pocket. Unruh covered him
with the revolver taken from the wouldbe murderer, and -commanded him
to stop. Crittenden drew his gun, and
everything looked favorable ‘for a
gun fight betwen the two men. Before
they could begin shooting, however,
lawyers Loyd and Highton and some
of the court: officials intervened and
disarmed them. Emma Ashley ran
across .the court-room _ followed by
Baldwin who feared she had another
pistol. » She was then arrested and
taken: to the city prison—where she was . :
baoked on a charge,of assault with intent to commit murder.
important! Decision About Fees
Fresno, July 2—Judge Garber has
renderéd an important decision on the
collection of fees by -County Clerks.
Heretofore the clerk has coltected from
litigants $2 for filing complaints, $2 for
placing the cause on the trial ‘calendar,
and a like sum at each step in the proceeding. These fees in some. cases
reached $100 in the aggregate and prevented poor men im many cases from
going to law to secure their rights.
The decision holds that the only fee
collectable is. $2 for filing the suit. Under it Fresno county will have to return te litigants many thousands dollars idlegally collected.

Battle With Strikers.
_ West View, Ohio, July 1—Over one
hundred mi were exchanged by
deputy sheriffs and strikers this morning at the Berrea stone quarries. No
one was.killed so far as known. One
striker had a leg broken. Many have
sore heads as the result of a hand to
hand conflict. The strikers approached
the quarry though the woods with the
avowed intention of routing the men
at work. They were met by the Sheriff
and forty deputies, who commanded
strikers began
shooting. The fight then became general. In afew moments the strikers
were repulsed and fell back to the
woods, The’ men in the quarries are
quitting through fear. While the
Sheriff’s posse and strikers were at
West View the women, in overwhelming numbers, took the quarry by storm
and drove out the workmen with clubs.
Th¢ strikers are rapidly returning from
West View and have been calling in
their’ pickets for the purpose of arming
them. Sheriff Leek finds that he cannot cope with them, as he cannot keep
all the points gudrdéd: ~The strikers
would not allow anyone inside their
line after the fight, so it was not possible to learn how many had been injured. None of the Sheriff’s party were
hurt. Four companies of the Fifth
Regiment have been requested to aid
the Sheriff. ,
