THREE LARGE HOUSES BURNED THIS
APTERNOON.
f acento eeta
The Loss Estimated to be Close to
Seven Thousand Dollars.
Abonat half past three o’clock this afternoon a fire started in the kitchen. of
Thomas Penrose’s house on upper Pine
street, and although the firemen were
quick: to respond to the alarm the
flames spread so rapidly that when the
fire boys reached the scene the entire
building was ina blaze.
C. E. Mulloy’s team took the hose
cart of Pennsylvania Engine Company
_No. 2‘in tow, but when a point in front
of the burning building was reached
one of the horses became so badly
frightened that he laid down. The heat
was intense and in a few moments the
cover of the wagon was on fire. Attempts were made to get the hose éart

finally removed. The hose was badly
scorched and the cart dumaged consid. }
ably.
One of Mulioy’s horses was taken to}
a place of safety without much trouble,
but the_other refused to get up for
some time and it was then with great
difficulty’ that Stephen Roberts and
John White managed to get him beyond the fire’s reach.
There was no water in the main pipe
at the time and consequently the fire
bad full sway. The firemen and citi-}
zens carried furniture and other effects ;
from the burning bouses and attempted .
to prevent the flames from spreading .
by using buckets of water but the lat-.
ter had little effect.
The two houses owned by Edwin}
Tilley, adjoining the Penrose house, .
were soon blazing.
rAfter a while a gate was turned on
somewhere and a weak stream. was ob-.
tained from this source.
One stretch of hose was brought}
from East Broad streét througb lots;
end across the creék to Pine street.
The other stretch was attached to the
bydrant in front of Lincoln schoolbonse.
With the aid of these small streams.
the firemen succeeded" in saving
McFall’s and J. C. Locklin’s yeaidenese:.
Owing to the fact that connections
were'being made with the new system
the water had been turned off from the
main.
LOSSES.
Thomas Penrose, house and farniture, $1400.
Edwin Tilley, two-houses, $2400.
Thomas Polmere, furniture, $800.
William McKinlay, furniture, $1000.
Henry Martin, furniture, $500.
Furniture and other things carried
from houses that did not burn were
badly damaged.
About half of the hosé on the cart of
Pennsylvania Engine Company No, 2
was burned so badly that it is useless.
The cart was also quite badly damaged.
It was reported that an infant child
of Mr. and Mrs. Penrose had been left
in the house, but. this proved to be a
mistake.
Fencing, sidewalks and electric light
poles in the immediate vicinity were
burned. The current was shut off
from the wires as soon as the poles
took fire.
The houses of B. Locklin and D. MeFaull caught fire from cinders several
times, but the flames were qiiénéhed
bv the aid of buckets of water.
A-cinder from/the firé was carried
upon the top of ‘Mra. Valantine’s house
on Main street and the roof set on fire.
The blaze was quickly extinguished by
parties in the neighborhood.
A SECOND ALARM.
ing set afire the roof of Thomas.H.
Reynolds’ house on Main street. This!
blaze was put out with a garden hose.

BiG MINING FIGHT BEGUN,
The Golden Gate and Gerrymander Compagies at War.
The opening gua in what promises to
be a great legal battle was fired on
Saturday’ last at San Andreas, when
the ease of the Gerrymander Company
vs. the Golden Gate Mining Company
came up before Judge Gottschalk.
The Gerry mander Company, through
its connsel, complained that the Golden
Gate Company had been acquiring its
wealth from the rich ores abstracted
from their grouud adjoining, and the
court was asked to issue an-order to
the effect that the plaintiffs could send
down their surveyors and men to ascertain the amount in which they had
been damaged. Both of the companiés

THE NATIONAL GUARD.
State Forces to Be Only Only Half Their Former Strength.
Governor Budd, Adjutant General
Barrett and Major General Dickinson
are authority for the statement that
the National Guard of California is
soon to be reorganized. And the plans
of these officiale may surprise some of
the men who had hoped to become officera of the new guard.
There can be no definite steps, however, until the government .reimburses
the Stete for all clothing, equipments,
went into the volunteer service.
As soon as this money is turned into
the guard fuhd a -portion of it will be
used to purchase new uniforms and
equipments for the new National
Guard, which, according to the present
plan, will be only half, or less than
half, the size it was before the President called for volunteers. Only half
the number of companies authorized
will be selected to make up the new
Guard, and these will comprise only
the minimum strength, or about 66
men each, The few Guardsmen who
did not volunteer wilt probably be the
nucleus, though a strict report must
be made as to why they did not volunteer and whether they are physically
capable of performing military duty.
-/It is the desire to hereafter enlist in
the Guard only’ those capable of fulfilling every regular army requirement.
A first-class Guard, though small, will
be the result.
General Dickinson has sent out for
detailed reports of the conditions of
all the companies, or what is left of
them, and as soon as these are sent and
as soon as General Barrett receives reetc., furnished when the guardsmen
process of rehabilitation will commence in earnest. All indebtedness,
army rent, and all other bills, names
of the officers in command, amount of
money due companies from the State,
number of members left, reasons for
not volunteering and nature of any
disability, will be outlined.
There will also be some arrangewent
whereby the_ brave ‘boys who volunteered from ‘the ranks of the Guard
will be permitted to again join without
losing rank, The details of this part
of the plan, however, have not yet been
