HE LAUNCHING of a seven-masted 10,000-tons displacement steel schooner on the Weymouth water front ig an incident that is pretty forcibly calculated to hush the talk of the disappearance of the sailing vessel. In fact, the day of this vessel, built. on dimensions never dreamed of as possible in former times, seems to be just coming in. Partisans of the Nicaragua canal route are urging this revival of the sailing ship as en objection to the Panama route. A region of calms, it is said, exists on the western side of the isthmus of Panama, which would make that route impracticable for sailing vessels during much of the year. Whether the Panama way is inferior __to the other in this particular or not—a matter open to dispute—the fact re— mains that the Penama route possesses a very substantial offsetting advantage in its mach shorter length. The coste of towing a sailing ship through the Panama canal would be small compared with the exactions of the other route. PReye ver De FH & MANY VISITORS ARE COMING. HAT THEEFFORTS OF NEVADA COUNTY to successfully advertise its resources to Eastern visitors next month will be crowned with success, is a foregone conclusion, for it bas already become noised abroad that the world-famous and banner.gold-producing county of the State of California will provide an extraordinary attractive display at San Francisco, during the great Knights of Pythlas Conclave and will have an excursion and gathering of visitors to this section of the State for the many who will desire to inspect its advantages and resources. The Transcript has already recelved many letters of inquiry frem various sections of the United States, aecking for farther information and requesting that literature be sent them bearing upon the subject. Other people of our community have also received Similar letters from friends and strangers throughout the East, asking for information concerning Nevada county and its proposed display of resources and entertainment of visitors next month. The following from a leading business man of Estherville, Iowa, who mined here in the ’50s, is a sample of the many communications we have received : Dairy Transonipt, Nevada City, Cal.: Gentlemen —I notice by the bewspapers that Nevada County is to make a display in San Francisco in August and is also guing to bave a great gathering at Nevada City, soon after. If you have any descriptive advertising matter of the affair, I. wish yow would astrous Ratna Colson New York, July 28.—Two trains collided on the Brooklyn. Elevated Railway at 9:45. this morning, near the Brooklyn bridge. Lass a Hal Milli, San Francisco, July 28—Judge Morrow of the U. S’ Circuit Court, rendered an important decision this morning in the case of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Mining Company against the Grass Valley Exploration Company. Suit was commenced by.the Pennsylvania Company and charged trespass, and the Exploration Company filed a counter suit to recover possession of the quartz vein in dispute. The decision was in favor of the Pennsylvania Company, and causes a loss of about half a million dollars to the Exploration Company. Personal Mention. . Weather Prediction Prof. Foster has issued the following weather bulletin, under date of July 19th. The next disturbance will reach Pacific Coast about July 28th. With thanks in advanee, and hoping to. see yoo later, I remain, yours truly, L. R. Binewam. Thus it will be seen that Nevada County's part of the program has already excited considerable atiention in the East, notwithstanding the fact that the time for the big event is almost a month off. There will doubtless be a large number of touriste aud homeseekers who will join the excursion and come here-in Auguat to enjoy our hospitality and see the inducements which Nevada county effers. Teall such we bespeak a hearty welcome, including Mr. Bingham and all other old-time pioneers who may come, and we know that many will receive such a favorable impression of our advantages and resources as to not only advertise them to their Eastern friends but will decide to come and live in this God-blessed section of the Golden West, 44444a4464668 THE SHADOW OF A SORROW. T CANNOT BE CONCEALED that reports emanating trom the phy sicians and entourage of King Edward have been strained in the direction of optimism, and that the condition of the illustrious patient is vers serious, although it seems to be generally believed that he will live to be crowned, Bat the ceremony is to be hastened, the King is to be in London but a single day, and then hurry baek to Cowes, and the ominois statement that a. second cperation will be necessary early in the Autumn is allowed to have currency. All the indications seem to point to a conviction on the part of Hie Majesty and the British Government that his race is about ran. He may sarvive the second application of the knife, but if things are as bad with him as recent reports would lead one to think, that is extremely doubtful. . The world may as well be prepared for the early calling awav of one of the . very moet prominent and interesting figures of the past generation. The empire could illy afford to spare Kiog Edward at this time. politically, the English sovereign is a figurehead; but the present monarch is a rémarkable social politician, and bis indirect lafasnce upon public affairs is well worth taking into account, as successive Prime Ministers have confessed for years, He is an accomplished diplomat, and the peace of Europe more than once has been preserved largely through his personal goed offices, No More. The company formed in Placerville y some time ago torunan automobile passenger line from that plaee to Lake Tahoe has come to grief, it is said, internal dissensions having broken out, The automobile purchased was attached by the company from which it wae purchased, which finally released the attachment and took the vehigle away. Ite two tripg.were disastrous ones, the last one resulting in the wrecking of the United States mail stage driven by Joseph Rupley, and his serious injury, while bie five passengers narrowly escaped being precipitated down the precipice slong the side of which the Tahoe State road runs. It is stated that Rupley intends to bring suit for $25, damages. et To Redeem , Postal Cards. The long looked for decision in the case of the Pennsylvania Mining Oompany vs. The Grass Valley Exploration Company, two adjoining claims, at Grass Valley, which was started in the U.S. Circuit Court in May, 1901‘ has been finally handed down by Judge W. W. Morrow, He gives the decision to the Pennsylvania on all, points, and declares they are entitled to the damages asked for in their complaint. Fred Searls of this city, Chas, W. Kitts of Grass Valley, and Lindley & Eiokhoff of San Francisco, were the attorneys for the Pennsylvania Mining Oompany, and they presented the points in such a clear end forcible manner, that the Judge had no alternative, and he decided flat-footedly in favor of the Pennsylvanie. This will mean much for the prosperity of Grass Valley, and the music of the twenty stamps will sound sweet to the ears of the Grass Valley public. The trial lasted about two months, and all the prominent mining men of the county were summoned as witnesses, as it involved many technical points in mining law. Fred Searls received the good news this morning, and was the recipient of many congratulations for the part’ he took the famous case. The mine will b opened on stipulation, and the case will be appealed to the United States Supreme Oourt. The Exploration Company own the well known W. Y.O. D., Orescent, Kate Hayes and the New York claims, while the Pennsylvania Company owns the old PennSylvania location and the Oliver ground. Both mines were dividend payers at the time when the suit was commeneed, and: the ground in dispute was very rich, The Pennsylvania ceased work immediately, while the Exploration Company operated the Crescent, but it did-not pay very well;
‘The Pennsylvania is owned principally by local people, and the Welssbein brothers control the W, Y. O. D. and other clatms. : : ee Oe Mra. L.
