great excitement at the corner of Pine
and Mon‘ gomery streets today, when
Duncan. F. McDonald. attempted to
shoot D. A. McDonald, President of
the City Improvement Association.
The trouble was the climax of the old
feud growing out of a lawsuit. The assailant fired two shots without. effect,
but several bystandershad narrow escapes. He was arrested for assault
with attempt to commit murder.
K Desperate Railroader
Los ANGELES, July 7.—W. H. Person, .
formerly employed in the freight department of the Santa Fe Railway in
this city, but lately out of employment,
attempted to murder his 8-year-old
daughter and then committed suicide.
Before the deed he told the child of
his plan and persuaded’ her that she
would be able to see her mother, who
is dead, if she took. poison with him.
He made her drink carbolic acid and
drank prussic acid himself. He had
sent a letter to a friend named Ball
telling of the deed, which he expected
would be delivered yesterday, but the
letter was delivered late the night before, and Ball burried to the room ‘of
Persou in time to find him gasping his
last breath. The girl was taken to the
hospital, and although her tongue and
throat were burned by the acid and
she suffered great agony, her life was
saved, She told. her father that she

wreck yesterday afternoon, two miles
from Cottonwood. Charles Broadhurst

that the gravel channel will be struck

At San Francisco Monday the °Gilt
Edge baseball team went up against

The incline at the Bellefontaine mine
is now down 250 feet, which is twenty
feet below the long drain tunnel., The
ledge is 16 inches wide, six inches of
which is the richest kind of ore, not
unlike the rich sulphurets ore of the
Lecompton mine, which assayed. over
